NV5600 Shifting
What is it about the NV5600 that makes everybody complain about how it shifts? I have one and I have absolutely no complaints with it. My brother has a G56 and his doesn't shift any better than mine, IMO. Maybe the guys that complain need to replace their clutches. Just kinda venting here.

I think it depends on what you are used to. I grew up on a farm driving big wheat and cattle trucks. None of them had the fancy synchros we have now. If you didn't pay attention and know what you were doing, you had a heck of a time shifting up or down. After I learned to drive in that environment, my NV5600 seems like a piece of cake!! If I had grown up on auto trannies, yes, I may have some issues with it. I love it, and I'll keep it.
By the way, I learned to drive in a '54 chevy 4 spd one ton, and hauled hay and cattle with a '48 chevy dually wheat/farm truck. In fact, that '48 was my first dually Dad still uses it on the farm today.

It's one of the best manuals I've driven, I think it's folks that haven't ever driven a manual, and don't have anything to compare it with. I'm beginning to not trust everything I read on the web, I lost my cat, and put in a MBRP muffler, and folks we're saying it would shake the windows in your house, wake the neighbors,etc.,etc,. I'm disappointed really , I don't think I got much more sound than it was factory stock, you can barely tell the difference, my UPS driver has a better sounding truck.

A lot of people say the G56 shifts smoother but I can tell you that my brother's doesn't at least. Shifts the same as mine and I drove his when it was brand new.

Mine shifts great, only problem i've had is when its been really cold (below zero) it grinds going from 2nd to 3rd for the first few shifts, but that is almost to be expected in any tranny at those temps.

I think there are a bunch of NV5600's that shift great, but my 03 was always rough when you hit 3rd.
It wouldn't grind, but unless you hit it exactly right it was prone to bump a bit, especially when cold. From the feel of it and how it shifts in every other gear, I don't think the clutch was the problem.
A buddy of mine has one that does the same thing...
I'm not someone who is not used to stick shift trucks, or expects a truck to shift like a sports car. I've never owned a rig with an automatic, and I also grew up driving old beaters and farm trucks.
By comparison truck I have now has the G which does shift better, but seems to make a bit more gear noise, I preferred the gear ratios of the NV5600, and I don't like the feel of the dual mass flywheel/clutch. The 5 speed 2nd gen truck we had at work also shifted much better than the NV in my 03 did...
Bottom line: I think there is a minority of NV's out there that really don't shift as well as they should, but if you happen to own a truck with a good shifting NV I'd hang on to it.
JMHO.

I saw in somebody's signature "NV5600 worst shifting transmission I have ever had in my life" or something to that effect and for some reason it just set me off. Plus I've read quite a few comments on this site about how bad the NV5600 shifts.

well i bought an NV5600, first manutal vehicle i have owned, shifted well for me but now im having grinding issues both up shifting and down shifting in 2nd (occasionally) and 3rd and 4th badly when the truck is cold, and anytime i do a somewhat quick shift into 3rd or 4th like when merging on the interstate etc. Ive heard that can be the cause of either a bad slave or worn synchros. If its the synchos i have a problem because NO WHERE stocks NV5600 synchros.......not even quad 4x4 anymore
