NV5600 owners?

Looking at a truck with nv5600 in it. My question is about a "growling" noise it makes when starting out in 1st or 2nd gear. Only happens when pulling away from a stop, at idle speed, then goes away. Is this normal? I've experienced this on more than a few trucks with this tranny.

Sounds like a possible drive support bearing. Have most of the trucks you have heard it on been long beds (2 pc driveline)? Noise there empty & loaded (laden/unladen)? (stock suspension I am assuming)

My truck will make a rattling or sorts just off of idle if you but there has never been a growling.

I guess it's more of a rattle like you are noticing. Only at idle speed, in gear. As soon as you increase speed the rattle is gone.

Both long and short bed. I don't think it's the carrier bearing.
The G56 doesn't make that sound.

The G56 has a dual mass flywheel which is supposed to dampen the low speed torsional accelerations that cause the rattling.

I drove a G56 and also noticed the noise couldn't be reproduced but I still prefer the 5600 (and the rest of my truck) over a new one.

I just chalk the noise up to my truck talking back to me asking to be in a different gear. haha

All the trucks with the NV5600 make that rattle vibration noise at low speed when trying to excellerate. Drove one 203,000 miles did it all the time. Its just a noise characteristic of the beast. My tranny was torn down at 185,000 miles. Nothing wrong inside with the exception of the 3rd gear synchro, normal, and sixth gear race. Give it a little more jucie when pulling away and it should disapear.

Pictures in my gallery.

As CoastalDav said, it's normal for the NV5600 with the single disk clutch. The low rpm vibrations from the Cummins transmit into the transmission causing the gears to rattle.

Thanks. This info you guys have given me puts my mind at ease. My brother in law has an '04 that does the same thing from day one. So, I might buy this '05.

Yep, completely normal... it's how you know you've got a real transmission : )

After you drive it a while, you won't even hear it. Mine has pulled every kind of load imaginable, and I have had zero problems with the tranny or the clutch. The tranny may rattle a bit at launch, but I've never had a "check engine" light and this truck has never stranded me. The '05 models are terrific trucks.

Thanks everyone for your input. I think I'll buy it if I can work the right deal with the guy. It only has 43,000 km on it. What is the warranty on the 2005 model?

Yea mine does it too, I find it annoying though. It is very loud rattle (louder with more KMS) till about 1100 rpm then goes away. 310,000 KMS done it ever since I have had the truck.

My 03 was pretty quiet, but it wasn't the easiest shifting transmission in the world.

05 I think had 3/36 bumper to bumper, and 5/50 powertrain, plus the 100k Cummins engine warranty? I could be mistaken...
