NV5600 Failure

Anyone broken an NV5600?

Interested to know how it happened, about any upgrades, and how to avoid repeating the problem(s).

Thanks!

Actually, we're using a fresh horse for this one

Some of us would like to know more about the NV for modding the manuals.

I am sure you saw my thread on my nv5600 failure.

- 70,000 miles
- towing about 1,000 of those miles 6-7000 lbs.
- never sled pulled, drag raced or even "speed" shifted.
- Drive about 200 miles per day. This was my work truck, I need it to make me money so I really did drive it nice and like I own it! I buy my own fuel so any extra cost from driving like a wild man just hit me in the pocket book.
- Always had the truck serviced @ the dealership.
- Never changed fluid since new. Never recomended in the Maintenence manual.
- It just started grinding going into 5th gear one day. 69,500 miles of perfect shifting then something fell apart in the 5th gear area.

well i bought my truck with 108k on her, then about 3 or 4 thousand miles later, i was shifting (like a sane person) from 3rd to 4th. I wasnt going very fast, but my rear duals completely lock up. i limp it back home in reverse, and tear into the trans. Replaced syncros, bearings and seals. Then about 10 - 12k miles later, it starts knocking. So i pull it again. now its in a tranny shop in springfield MO getting rebuild. So we'll see how it goes....

I dont really think there is a whole lot you can do to 'upgrade' it. fast coolers or the filters that you stick on the side instead of the pto covers, or a short throw shifter. None of which i think is worth the money.

Hmm...

Mike B - your G56 has already made it to 90+K miles, but Swamp Donkey's NV5600 crapped out at 69,500 miles... I'd say you're ahead of the competion, AND an accident waiting to happen

NV5600 - 240K - 5th gear grind - If I gently shift into gear I can do it without grinding. And yes, I am using the clutch. It seems that I have to put it into gear on the top left corner of 5th gear. If that makes sense.

G56 - 95K - Pops out of 6th gear - The problem I thought was a fluke. I thought I was resting my hand too heavily on 6th gear while cruising. Maybe became worse and worse and continued to think, "nah its me" but later grenaded.

Just curious for those in the know. I heard building up the 47or8RE can set you back $3-4K. How much to rebuild an NV to spec or better, not including upgrading the clutch?

Very good question.

I ONLY sought out manual trucks when searching for my new one. I had an auto, was never really pleased with how it towed (not disgusted either, just not overly happy)
After a few years of hearing "Give Dave a call", Give DTT a call", I alway's knew I wasn't in the game if I had to spend upwards of $4K to make my 47RE remotely safe to run with a slightly modded set up. (Hence my decision to seek 6 spds).

Anyway, now that we have had 19 pages of pro sled-pullers telling us how crappy the G-56 is, I am suprised to say the least.

The New Ventures are off to a bad start so far in this thread.

The saga continues..............

I hear you. All I remember reading is "The sticks are bulletproof. Just upgrade your clutch and you're good to go."

I'm mostly curious on whats the worse case senario if there was a major issue with my NV, once it's out of warranty, what I'd be looking at.

I'm thinking $1500-$2K, but since these are heavy duty and built to work, I'm probably no where near the ball park, let alone in it.

the following is a post currently over on the tdr ... i'd call this a worse case senario for NV5600 owners ...

No nv5600 in Canada or USA. 5+ weeks in shop.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My truck has been in the shop waiting for a new transmission on warranty for 5 weeks today. Still no ETA. When I make my weekly call they just say still no word from DC on when I can expect a replacement. Take care of your nv5600 because I don't think DC cares to much about replacement tranny's!

yes parts are getting real hard to find. Mine is going to cost me $2100 to rebiuld, and WCS is bad core. and they told me $800 for a good core. So $2900 right now and it won't go nowhere but up, do to availbility IMO
