Newbie, need help with tranny question
I dont know if you guys have seen my other post but i just bought an 05 2500 4wd for a really good price it just needs a new tranny. I was planning on selling it but since its mine and it is paid for and I want a diesel truck anyway I might as well keep it. Anyways i've been researching this site pretty much everyday now and seen a couple of post about needing to beef up the tranny before doing any mods. I'll i want to do is install a cai, programmer, and stacks plus a water/meth kit. Since im going to have the tranny rebuilt anyways does it need to be beefed up.I dont want a race truck i just want something that sounds good and is extremely reliable. This is my first diesel so please excuse my ignorance. Thanks for the help
Beefing up the tranny depends on what you want to do with it. If you're putting on any power adders, I would go with aftermarket.
I would suggest going with a good aftermarket TC, VB, and a deep pan at the least. I know ATS offers a rebuild kit for their tranny's, maybe you should look at something like that. (not sure if anyone offers that right out of the box.)
You could go with stock parts, however, if you tow a lot or play, you'll just be fixing it again in a few years.
Right now, I think that most talked about transmission is Goerend, but there are a ton of great transmissions out there. I have had my ATS for 3+ years now, and I love it, not a bit of problems.
I think you can get out the door with a solid aftermarket tranny for about 5k.
Good luck with that thing. Keep us posted.

Performance Diesel (http://dieselperformance.com/) offers complete rebuild kitas and or complete rebuilt trannies that have been dyno tested. ATS (http://www.atsdiesel.com/ats2/index.asp?) does the same. You need to get in touch with a local authorized shop in your area to have one dropped in the truck. About $5-$7K installed, should only take abut 2 days removal/install and testing. Well worht the money unless you are going to do it yourself.
Make sure you get billet torque convertor and flex plate installed also.

Honestly I dont think I need a fully built tanny. I just wanted a basic (better than stock) transmission for what im going to be doing, a little bit of towing here and there and daily driving. Plus exhaust, cai, and maybe a smarty jr. I just need to take it one step at time unfortunately, I drove the truck today and there is a lot of play in the steering so im worried about that whole death wobble thing, so im going to have the guy rebuilding the tranny take a gander at it. Thanks fella's -Josh
Josh... Don't go stock. You need a valve body (prebuilt or your tranny guy can put a kit in it) to boost line pressures and minimize slipping. Also you want the 48RE to flow fluid in park.
I'd put in a torque converter. Get more power to the ground, better reliability and mileage.
That may be all you do if you keep power stock. Ask your tranny guy. If he's replacing clutches anyway, upgraded ones aren't much more. Check the price and decide.
A rebuild will run you maybe $3K. A performance rebuild could be as low as $3500. If the extra $500 gives you better performance, life and mileage wouldn't you go with it?

There is a guy not to far from me that is going to do the rebuild for a reasonable price. We have discussed some of the options I have as well as the things that goes into his rebuilds that are better than stock, it just depends on what I am going to do with the truck. So far I figured I will go with a goerend tc and a custom flexplate. He'll take care of the rest, I actually found him from some of the members on here that dealt with him and had nothing but good things to say. Thanks dtr -Josh
