Newb: Diesel break-in suggestions
Newb: Diesel break-in suggestions
Being a first time diesel owner I was wondering if the break-in process is similar to a gasser? Generally, I have stayed off the throttle and breaks for the first thousand miles and has served me well.
Any recommendations or suggestions on breaking the Cummins in?
Again, thanks for the warm welcome and look forward to getting to meet everyone. Missing my buds over on F150 online and think I may have a few converts come over with me!

Same as they said above. Take it easy the first 500-1000 miles, then drive it like you stole it. Stay away from synthetic for 25-30K miles. Loading it down and driving the snot out of it worked good for me. Just keep up on your maintanence, let it warm up and cool down.
Yeah. I'd say basically no heavy towing for the first 500, mainly for the ring/pinion in the rear end. Cummins suggests working the engine right off the bat to seat rings.
Make sure the oil level stays full, no synthetics until fully broken in, avoid lugging the engine (Cummins defines loading the engine below 1600 rpm), and I'd also try to limit cold start short trips...
Enjoy the new truck, and welcome again to the forum.

To help clarify this statement “I'd also try to limit cold start short trips...” it means don’t take a lot of short trips of less then 10 miles with the engine not being at full operating temps as it’s hard on the oil and engine. Like the others said load the puppy up, then run it for as long and as far as you can non-stop.
OK if this is all true. I have about 8000 mls on my truck. should I make a large run with some heavy wieght now or will that help me? Before that should I have my truck flashed and then my the run or just put as much weight on it as I can and GO GO GO? I have not been able to get my truck above 20 mpg. Will this also help that or am I just stuck with what I got?
I've heard these things can take up to 20,000 miles to seat rings if driven gently, so I would think towing something up a grade might help.
My truck produced pretty good milage right off the bat, maybe only increasing .5 as it got some miles on it. Speed seems to make a huge difference in highway milage.
