New Owner questions

Just bought an '06 six speed. I've got three observations/questions, at least for starters.

1. The mileage on the first tank full was lower than I had expected. 15.8mpg, according to the fancy little overhead computer thing. This was about 85% highway miles. Should I be getting better than that?

2. When I shut the motor down there is a pretty healthy shudder as the motor stops and a pretty good rattle from down low on the drivers side of the engine compartment. Is this also normal? I haven't had the time yet to track down what is rattling.

Other than those two things I'm pretty happy with the truck. Can't wait to put the brake controller in and hook up the trailer for some more fun.

My third observation is that I agree with some other opinions that I've read on this board, I wish there were one more gear at the top end for when you're running with no load.

Thanks, Dan

Can't speak for the 6 speeed but my auto with 4:10's ran about the same mileage until I started playing aftermarket toys. And mine definatley shudders when it's shut down, usually a big squeak from the belts too. Enjoy the new truck, welcome!

MPG's should improve with miles, and especially after putting a load on it. These engines LOVE to work. Get a load on it & drag it around for a few hundred/thousand miles.

When mine comes in, I am expecting to do MANY MANY fishing trips, even though the boat weighs in at 3k. I may also load up a car on the flatbed & go for a drive through the hills, weighing ~6k.

Thanks for the responses. I'm looking forward to towing with this. The load I tow most often is my old '63 landrover on a trailer, probably about 6500 lbs.

Glad to be in a diesel again. I've been towing for the past 4 years with a range rover that was woefully inadequate for that load.
