new 06' making shuttering sound, normal???

i now have close to 2k miles on my new 06 2500. the second day i had the truck i started noticing a sound coming from the engine bay while driving. the best way to describe the sound would be a shutter/vibration. i only hear it while driving and on the throttle. very noticable when accelerating. the noise goes away when off the throttle and rpms are dropping or at idle. also no noise while sitting still in p or n and reving the engine. only while accerating in gear. i start to hear the noise the same time the turbo starts to whine and the engine makes its CTD noise while accelerating. all three noises happen at the same time. what could this sound be? im thinking its auto trans related because it only does it while driving (in gear), not in p or n. but then again maybee thats just because theres no load on the engine in p and n.

yeah, when i first heard it i thought it sounded kind of like detonation in a gas engine. its hard to describe, sounds kind of like an exhaust leak but i checked all the clamps on the turbo/exhaust. maybee its a normal sound for the CTD. i have never owned one before so i wouldnt know. but it sure doesnt sound normal. it may have something to do w/ the injection but it would also do it while sitting still revving, wouldnt it??

It sounds to me like you could never hear the diesel part of the 6.0 over the Turbo Whine now you can actually hear what a real diesel sounds like !!!! I think that you are hearing the natural CTD Clatter!! If you are unnerved by it then take it to the dealer and see what there tec says!!

is the ctd clatter you are talking about only when there is a load on the engine. this sound only happens while driving and accelerating, not while revving the engine sitting still. i can hear the diesel injection along with the turbo whine but there is also this third noise.

I guess in my old truck it was muffled by the lack of exhust and the rotary injection pump

boy I miss that Old GOAT but when it would roll backwards when left in low gear on a 15 degree grade she became someone else's baby goat

I've been watching these threads on clatter in the '06.

At first I thought it was guys not used to what a Cummins sounds like.

You know, a 2nd gen is so noisy, how can you possibly hear any clatter?

But then it happened to me. And then I was the posting about clatter.

So I started thinking about what had changed to affect the engine, and then it dawned on me. The weather had suddenly got a lot colder.

I also read something about the Fuel Control Actuator (FCA) and the low sulfur diesel.

At this point, I'm not concerned enough to replace the FCA or drive around inspecting pumps for more sulfur.

I honestly don't think it's anything to worry about.

See if it still does it in Summer.

.............Jim

I hear this same sound in my 06, my 04.5 never had that sound. so i thought something was wrong, it sounds like a nasty manifold exhaust leak. also sounds like its coming from the driver side of the motor

it does sound like a nasty manifold leak, thats a good way to describe it. i think i may go by the dealer and see if a tech would go for a quick ride w/ me just incase. even if its a normal noise, it would still be nice to know exactly what it is. last night i was driving through the neighborhood behind another much slower car and had to pretty much coast at idle for at least a few blocks, then when i suddenly accelerated the noise came in and sounded MUCH worse in that situation. almost sounded like a trans noise at that point.

Mine has a funny noise too, but I wouldn't say it sounds like an exhaust leak. It sounds more like slight detonation in a gasser or a timing chain rattling around. It seems to have the rattle more when cold, but still does it when warm too.

At first I was concerned about it because I've never heard a similar noise from my '93...but then I remembered you can't hear ANYTHING around the '93 while it's running!

Most of you guys responding to this seem to have auto's. I have the G56 that makes some weird noises. I have "the rattle" in 3rd and 5th that I attribute to just engine/tranny noise telgraphing through the stick because the noise is not present in 2nd, 4th or 6th. BUT, I have, over the last several months, noticed a noise in 6th at exactly 65-70 mph. It is loudest at around 67 mph. It sounds like spark knock, or something jingling under the truck, and only at this speed. Now, it is faint, but I can hear it. I've cruised around at the same relative RPM in lower gears and the noise will not present itself. Only between 65-70 and in 6th. I am guilty of shutting it down without pressing the clutch in (before I knew any better), but that was for only a few months and maybe 15K of its current 36K miles.

i checked a few things under the hood and found that this noise is actually at least two noises in one. the loud "rattle" part of the noise was actually the trans dipstick rattling around in the tube. i found this out when i checked the fluid level and went to put the dipstick back in (engine running) and it made that distinct rattling noise. so i pulled it out, put some tape over the hole and went for a drive. alot of the noise was gone, put it back in and the rattle clearly came back while driving. now, some of the noise was still there w/o the dipstick and im thinking maybee that is the clatter that everyone speaks of. it has that clatter/exhaust leak/flutter sound. if i get a chance i still may go by the dealer just to see.

Hey Ghost Ram,

I see that you had an '04 6.0 that you must have issues with. I also had a problem child '04 6.0 that I traded for this truck. I too listen for every sound and rattle and wonder if its something going up on the truck. I think that because of our previous trucks, we are now paranoid of everything we hear. I also have the sound(noise) that you are talking about, as do alot of other people. Hopefully its normal...let us know what the dealer says if you take it in.

Maybe we should start a support group for previous owners of the 6.0..
