Need the lowdown on LUCAS

Hey everybody, newbie here. Bought an 06 4x4 SB new with the 5.9. Got around 23k on it now. Don't want to be the new whiner with the first post, but the fuel mileage ain't what I thought it would be with this diesel. i tow heavy once in a while (contractor) but run shorter unloaded trips a lot too. With this winter fuel here in PA I can't seem to get her to give me more than 12 to 13 and @ 3.60 a gal I'm wantin more. (just like everyone) Will this additive give it the push I need or am I wastin dough. I can get a gallon of the stuff for about 27 bucks. Pretty much a stock truck except for the racks and the nerf bars. Thanks in advance for the advice. By the way I'm a first time diesel owner and I never thought there would be so much to learn. If it was made out of wood I could fix it!

Run lucas in fuel and crankcase all the time. Good stuff. Buy the fuel lube due to ULSD doesn't have the best lubrication for fuel pumps. You probably need to change fuel filter. The lucas is good use it. Don't want your fuel pumps going bad.

Thanks Redbeard, I did just change the fuel filter. I'm glad I found this site, none of my friends have diesels. Does it increase mpg like it says it does? When can I expect "break in" mileage wise. I really don't think dealerships know what they are talking about. Like I said before I'm @ 23k

I tried it before and did not get the miraculous results some others have posted. I would still run it though just to keep the fuel system working properly. I normally run the Power Service/Marvel Mystery Oil mix only because it is easy to find close to home. I have never noticed any gains running it either. Running some kind of additive just makes me feel better. ....

I run Lucas about every other fill. Use it for lube to compensate for ULSD, no fuel mileage increase. Fuel mileage is very subjective. If you do a search on it, you'll LOTS of info. Key to optimal fuel mileage is keep those tires at 80, keep your RPMs under 2.000 (speed under 70). And don't hammer that fuel pedal!

nailbender, I use it to compensate for lack of lubrication in ulsd. Not one of the additives I have tried made a significant difference in mpg. Lucas is well known in drag racing and the trucking community for being quallity product. I have used it for 7 yrs now.

Thanks guys, I'll go get a gallon.Don't want to be at the parts store too early. Think a high flow exhaust would help and maybe a chip? Don't want to void my warranty but I really expected more mpg than I'm getting. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Your mileage will go up. I was getting 13-14 city when mine was new. I'm averaging over 16mpg city now even with the mods. An intake and freer flowing exhaust can't hurt anything...

Takes more then 23k as a rule.Friends of mine whom have put 150k on several of these trucks say it takes 40/50k and the best mileage peaks at 100k.Thats towing 90% of the time.Plus short intown trips really vary. From what I've read about Lucas fine for fuel.Do NOT use the Lucas oil additive.More reading on www.bobistheoilguy.com

If you keep your RPM's under 2K on the hwy and dont run the snot out of it at every redlight in town, you WILL get at least 16 mpg avg. If not, there is something wrong with your truck. I used to run a mix of Power service and 2 stroke oil when I was around 20K and my mileage was over 18 on the hwy, I saw 20-22 a few times. Im at 40K mi right now.

Lucas vs. Bio

Wow! Did read on Lucas additive for oil interesting. Did read on fuel additive.... found that the Lucas doesn't rate as well as bio on friction test. Heck bio even beat the best fuel additvie. Called around and found B99 for $ 3 gal. Gonna use B99 for fuel for now on. Lucas $ 29 gal. B99 $ 3 gal. Ratio to proportion bio better. Cost effective bio better. Lubrication bio better. Now need to research oil additives more. Thanks for the info. Great site.

I did the Lucas and power service route and just quit , 8 injectors and two turbo's later I figured it was just a waist of money . I never seen any difference in MPG our the way the engine ran , my vote is to save your money .

For the money, check out these, 2 cycle oil and opti lube, I'm running 1.6 gallons of B 100 for now, Lucas would be my last choice theres too many better choices out there than lucas.
