Need Help Urgently!!!
Hi Guys. This is my first post and I have a big problem. let me give you the run down.
2004.5 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 5.9 Cummings Turbo Diesel
166,701 miles
On February 20, 2008 Ran out of Fuel, had somebody bring me 2 gallons of Diesel, then went and filled tank immediately. 1-2 days later it started running rough (at idle only). Thought fuel filter needed replacement. 2-3 days (about 500 miles later) returning from out of town work, the motor idling rough, turned off and would not start. It had a loud knocking while cranking along with white smoke at exhaust. After towing home, ran several codes. P0341-cam sensor, P2509-Ecm/Pcm Power Intermittent, P0514-Batt Temperature, and several others seemed minor.
Replaced cam sensor and crank sensor (Both same identical part)
Cleaned tank fuel lines, filter canister, replaced fuel filter also, still no start.
Fuel pump in tank operating properly, primed canister, checked for fuel at rail and injectors (pressure there) still no start.
At one point motor started in Reverse rotation after short cranking on starter and ran away, the only thing that shut motor down was stuffing arm up exhaust to cut off air intake. I have talked to many diesel mechanics and they said that they have never heard of a Cummins doing this. Took the truck to Dodge, who after 4 days said they did not know what was wrong with the truck. Mechanics at Dodge said that they would have to install a $2800 injector fuel pump, before they could do more testing. They didn’t even sound sure of themselves and had the nerve to offer me $8,000 to trade in the truck. I have checked plugs for looseness at ECM. I have also checked the fuse link at driver battery. Please help. I am desperate. Thanks in advance.

First of all thanks to every one trying to help.
After replacing the sensors the same codes came back.
Smkn600CTD where can I locate the PCM wiring?
That is the same question that I had, but a mechanic said that when that happens the engine will run off its own lubricants. Thanks.

The cummins PCM is on the drivers side of the engine, down low, forward.
You'll see three large square plugs that plug into the PCM. Follow the harnesses the best you can, to be sure none of the wires are rubbed thro8ugh and grounding out. Also, on the fenders for grounds that might be loose.

Usually the only way they "run away" is when the turbo fails, fills the charge air cooler full of oi, and the oil is sucked into the intake. True meaning of oil burner. Having fuel in oil also makes it worse of course.
I still don't understand how you shut if off.
the only thing that shut motor down was stuffing arm up exhaust to cut off air intake.
How did stuffing your arm up the exhaust cut off the air to the intake and subsequently shut down the engine?

I am going to check connectors to the PCM this afternoon. Hopefully is just a wire rubbing on some metal.
He said it was running backwards. Two things to keep in mind. Just about any engine will sometimes kick back and spin a few revolutions backwards. Diesels can sometimes suck oil past their rings and run away burning their own lube oil. His story doesn't sound all that unreasonable, just unusual.
Man Thats really weird, sorry I cannot help you past checking the PCM wiring. Im just following the thread to see what the heck is going on with your rig. Hopefully it is something that can be fixed easily.
