Stock 04 2500 4x4 with 6 spd. Only tow a pop-up trailer every quarter or so. Do not plan to bomb...

What should I install and I don't want to overdo the dash with a gozillon guages. Water TEMP/Oil PSI/FUEL PSI/ 6 spd temp/ EGT ?

My understanding is that these trucks go into electronically controlled shutdown mode (for lack of the proper term) long before you can damage them.

I dont mind gauges, they look nice but I wonder how often they are really needed on a STOCK truck even if towing.

Any Dodge mechanics, techs, etc out there that can comment on the failsafe mechanisms on our truck?

If these trucks have a failsafe mechanism for things like EGT then they would have to be monitoring EGT. I've done some looking and can not find a stock sensor or probe. Also, I know guys that are towing heavy with mild bombs (which include gauges) and are able to get their EGTs to 1300 and better without any warnings or shutdown.

Well, all the stuff about self protection leads me to wonder why my 04.5 went to 1300 and was still climbing while I was playing on some hills between Chas and Columbia. I was in overdrive and was accelerating uphill just to see what would happen. Yes, a stock truck will go above 1300 without defueling or slowing down. I had just had the gages installed and a good thing too. Had I been towing I would have slowed down a little and come out of overdrive. That test is maybe next week when I get the TT (10,800lbs) ready to go with full water and gear.

Cheers
Gordon

What is the max temp that the stock truck should see without causing damage? Could it be that 1300 reached is not there yet and thats why nothing happened? I dont know. Next time I am at the dealer I will ask as well.

I agree, there is no mechanism for the ECM to monitor or control EGT's, I could easily hit 1200 on my 03 pulling a 12K cattle trailer, still pulled hard, but hit some very high temps, luckily I got a new truck because my New black 03 dually w/ 9K miles, broke a connecting rod. Dealer wanted to replace engine, instead I got them to replace truck... great dealer, specially when you used to date owner's daughter! Never found out what caused the rod to break in half... I moved to Alabama....

Failsafes???

brillmtb,

Can't say for sure on the EGT failsafe to my knowledge no it doesn't have one. I do know that most all newer vehicles have a coolant temp and oil pressure failsafes. In most cases they PCM cuts off fuel to every other cylinder if coolant temps get high, if they continue to rise all cylinders are cut off. Oil pressure is the same as well.

OK I am convinced that I need EGT on a stock Truck, But why do I need Boost?
I have the SRT-10 Pillar, and was planning on ordering the Di-Pricol EGT gauge.
It is $64 less than the dual, but if I need a boost, I will spend the extra.
