Need Advise

I have an 04.5 quad cab 4x4 with the only upgrade being a Walbro fuel pump. When pulling my TT up a pretty steep pass about 8% the truck seems to go into a defuel mode after about a half mile. No smoke black or white, no CEL and it ran fine after the pass. The TT weighs 12k loaded. Am I asking too much to hold 65mph or even 60 up the mountain? I ordered a boost fooler in hopes that might help (did I just waste $65.00? )

I would say yes to your question. A 12k trailer behind a 8k truck is allot of weight. Since you don't state what tranny you have I'll guess it's an auto. An 8% grade is allot, especially weighing 20k. FWIW, when I was running bone stock I saw the biggest increase in grunt on the hills when I installed a turbo air guide (TAG).

Sorry, yes it is an auto. The funny thing to me is that it pulls hard and holds speed until "someone turns the power off". This is the second time on the same mountain that it has repeated this behavior. All the other passes are about as steep and it holds 65 all the way to the top. This particular one just happens to be my nemisis.

2700-2800, and it seems like it goes into a defuel mode. Then I have to pull it down a gear because it won't downshift.

Have you checked to see if it's set any codes? I'll bet the ECM is commanding de-fuel due to overboost. You may be on the right track with the boost fooler, but it shouldn't be doing that and might be the straw that breaks the tranny's back. Seems like a tranny problem, just a WAG. I'd check for codes.

I used my Innova scan tool and there were no codes. Right now I could really do without transmission troubles. I just checked the tranny fluid and the level was fine with no burnt smell. I never have a problem making it downshift anywhere else but that *&%$#&*& pass.

The fooler is on but it will be two weeks before I get to try it out against my nemisis. Wish me luck.

I wonder if his tank pickup is starving for fuel? What does your fuel pressure read when all of this is going on?

At that point in my trip I have at least 3/4 of a tank. I don't have a gauge where i can see it while driving but with a Walbro I doubt that it drops enough to matter. I am sure someone will disagree, there are several other passes that are just as steep but this one has my number.

What is your fuel pressure set at?

What kind of boost psi are you seeing at that hard pull?

What about your fuel filter(s)?

Too many variables without some hard numbers to diagnose problem.

Well it helped a lot no sudden loss of power, it just kept churning along and held 60mph to the top. Only one trip so the jury is still out.
