Near Turbo Failure..

Well looks like my truck won't be running for a while.

Installed the AFE stage 2 intake, and found play on the turbo shaft and wear on the inside of the turbo casing.

I tried looking for some info, but no luck.
Are the factory turbos rebuildable?
Can I just replace the center section and the turbines?
Is my turbo interchangeable with the newer 04.5 ones?
What are my options?

The truck is an 2004 305HO with 75K miles.

Any input is appreciated.

JR,

Isn't the engine (and turbo) 100K warranty. Contact the dealer or Cummins.

I was under the impression the turbo is covered under the general warranty because it's external of the engine?
My truck has 75K therefore I thought I was out of luck?

Am I wrong?

Better take off the AFE or the dealer will probably blame you for the turbo failure. Better safe than sorry.

Which side of the housing is showing wear? I may be in the same boat---see post "turbo or something sounds terrible" from a few days ago.

Well I dug a little further into my turbo and this time took pictures.

The leading edges of my compressor turbine are chewed to pieces. I have no idea how this happened as I've only owned my truck for two weeks.
I checked the factory intake tubing, the air box and all connections.
Everyting looks fine with no tears or holes anywhere.

I spoke with a brother of a buddy of mine who is a mechanic at my local dealership and his comment was that if I take the truck in, his service manager will argue the fact the play in my turbo was caused by the the off balanced compressor wheel, therefore not covered under warranty as the air filter and all associated maintenace is the owner's responsibility.

So I'm thinking i'll just save myself the hassle and agrivation and install a used or an upgraded turbo.

What is the type of turbo in my truck? I can't find any sort of identifying marks or stamps.
So here is the question, can a turbo off of an 05 be installed on a 04 305HO?
Is there any other option other spending 2K on a new turbo?
Can the factory Holset be rebuilt?

Any and all input is welcome and very appreciated,

Thanks Guys,
JR.

JR,
The turbo on your truck is a HE341W.
Yes you can install a turbo from a 2005 on an 03/04....been there done that (but there are some details that will need to be taken care of for the wastegate plumbing).

Depending on how bad your failure was it can be rebuilt. From the looks it will need several new parts....

Man, that's nuts. I wonder what the heck the previous owner did.....run it with no filter on? When I took my stocker off at 110k it looked nearly pristine aside from looking used. Look around on here, you might find someone selling off a stocker for a couple/few hundred bucks.

Thanks for the info guys.

Where can I find information on retrofitting an 05 turbo to an 04?
Can it be as simple as switching my existing compressor wheel housing onto the 05' turbo?

Thanks, JR.

yep.... looks like the truck was being ran in an extremely dirty environment and the filter failed. Definitely looks like dirt/sand intrusion. Had it happen to my '89 model after a local shop worked on it for me.(they left the intake boot clamp off) Wasn't as bad as yours though... Good Luck!

Hey guys, thanks for the info to date,

Does anyone out there have any experiance with fitting an 05 turbo to an 04?
Can it be as simple as switching my existing compressor wheel housing onto the 05' turbo?

I've got my truck sitting on my front street, turbo removed, and need to get this resolved asap, with my luck it'll get towed tomorrow or some silly thing like that.

Once again, thanks for the input and all the advice.

JR
