Re:MY V10 GASSER PULLS BETTER THAN MY NEW CTD!

I will echo what others said... the truck will make more power and get better mileage with time. It may take 10k miles, it may take 30k miles. It'll depend on how much of a workout you give it. The better the workout, the sooner it'll happen.

My '01 was a SLUG when I bought it (and a 6-speed too). It got 10 mpg loaded or empty for the first 12k miles. After that, mileage started going up. By about 25k, it got about 16 unloaded and anywhere from 9.5 to 14 loaded depending on what I was carrying/towing.

So far, my new truck gets 11.5 unloaded and 10.5 loaded, which is already better than the old truck. And being an auto, I'm very impressed with its power. 'Course mine's an HO too.

I did a test tow back when the truck had about 700 miles on it... I hooked up my 24' enclosed car trailer and had two quads in it (total weight about 5500 lbs) and towed from Reno up to Donner Summit and back. Traffic issues notwithstanding, I had no trouble pulling the entire grade at pretty much any speed I wanted. If speed dropped off in 4th, I'd lock out OD and I could accelerate briskly uphill in 3rd at 2500-2800 RPM. Very nice!

AND, as others pointed out, there are always power options available from the aftermarket. Me, I'm waiting eagerly for the new TST PowerMax CR.

Re:MY V10 GASSER PULLS BETTER THAN MY NEW CTD!

Well.

This from my College Physics book....which puts things in laymans terms (so I may understand it) in italics.

Torque is the ability to start an object moving and keep it moving.

Horsepower is how quickly you can start an object, accelerate/decelerate an object.

That being said I think all these arguements are cleared up.

But one thing to remember and it is cleared up in the text is Torque is the basic measurement and horsepower (for engines and motors) is torque multiplied by a given speed (engine or rear wheel rpm). Also remember that torque is multiplied by gearing. For instance a 4.00:1 rear axle on a 6:1 first gear ratio, torque is multiplied 24 times and some is lost due to the rear tire radius, forces of friction, overcoming moments and so on.

horsepower and torque in regard to Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) is always equal at 5252 rpm regardless of quantity of pistons or displacement. With electric motors you always have peak horsepower, whether at 1 rpm or 10000rpm.

So to find ICE crankshaft horsepower at any given engine speed based on torque output is a simple proporational multiplication.

IE: 400ftlb(whatever rpm/5252hpftlb)= horsepower at whatever rpm.

So if you know you have 400ftlb at 1800rpm you can solve horsepower at that rpm.
400fltbl (1800rpm/5252)=137hp.

This can all go to gearing your car for the quarter mile and how much horsepower it takes to get a 2800# car to go a 12 second quarter mile if you have all the forumlas. Then you break it down to acceleration and transmission gearing and you can figure how long the car will be in each gear and so on. People always wonder why new cars are so quick, the reality is the engineers figure all this stuff out and the computers are much quicker at figuring "seat of the pants" optimum shift points than humans are.

Of course, this is a a perfectly valid mathematical equality with little practical value! The CTD is in many pieces by 5252 rpm;D

and cp is right about gearing. The gasser's generally higher rpms is what generates the high HP. all it takes is a lower gear (possible because of the higher rpm) and all of a sudden the gasser is generating lots of torque too! 300 ft lbs of torque at 4,000 rpm is equivalent (ignoring gearing losses) to 600 ft lbs of torque at 2,000 rpms with a .5:1 gear. One reason why automatics are good off the line -- the TC multiplies torque by about 2 at the stall speed.

chutes at 22k i am getting around 22 ~ 25 hwy, alot of v 10 gassers complaint could be due to gearing and or tire size!

I think that the reason is that it is a Kalafornia '03. I am not sure.

Re:MY V10 GASSER PULLS BETTER THAN MY NEW CTD!

On an 03 I would ditch the cat and oem muffler and get a box....infact my friend has an o3 crew cab drw ho with 6 spd and pulling a 24 ft enclosed car trailer with air etc...up a 6 % grade (the test hill) he starts at 76 mph and ends at the top at 72mph.

Ona side note my 98 12 v smoked a powerstroke yesterday. He was in front of me in a left hand turn lane to an up hill. he went really slow around the turn then just as we straightened out I moved over (still behind) and he romped on it....I could tell ......the smoke.....I m guessing not stock....and it had exhuast.....but I shifted to third and drove around him then moved over infront of him before even getting into 4th......(I had another left to make up the road... ;D

Id be concerned if something was wrong.....or are cali trucks just that clogged up?
