Just wire a toggle switch into the horn relay circuit to manually disable the "feature" when backing up.

Just remove the door panel and cut the pink wire going to the door latch.
This way the ECM thinks the door is always closed.
This was my fix.

Here's a post from someone who has done the jumper wire.

All you guys need to do is unplug the 2 wire plug next to the seatbelt(drivers side 4 inches lower than where it buckles) then put a very small wire across the 2 leave it in there and plug it back in,This will disable the reverse horn honk, the seatbelt light and seatbelt ding.

He's referring to a jumper wire accross the wires on one plug not between the two plugs.

what year truck is this?
you guys need to remember - every year is VASTLY different.

my 04 has had that wire jumpered out since new - i can't understand why Dodge is so stupid that you can't use the odometer as an "info center" to set parameters in the ECM, like you can use the Chevy info center to program stuff.

my horn honks all the *&^%% time.

dodge just don't give a hoot about us. dodge wants us to be embarrassed by our horn honking like we are kindergarten kids to dumb to work a gear lever (or is it them, to stupid to "enjuhneer" it properly?)

Personally, I'd go back to the dealer and EDIT and not leave until they un-did it. That is a bunch of bull butter. I wouldn't stand for it...law or no law.

That's what the one dealer here said when I took my friend's 05 in.

Told them to leave it alone, and they said......"OK, no prob"

The scenario:

My brother is giving a clinic on horse training, all the focus is on him.
Meanwhile I am hooking up my 32' gooseneck trailer in the background.
Door open I look directly at the trailer, all clear. I put it in reverse and swing my head to the rear of the truck where I lift off the seat a few inches to see the alignment of the gooseneck ball while backing up.
Honk, honk, honk... my 06 starts going off, I even think the lights were flashing not sure. I slam on the breaks wondering what the $%&* is going on and the entire clinic is now staring at me wondering what the idiot in the truck is doing. My brother who has an 04 joking asked if I got the horn button and gear shift lever mixed up. Yea, right…

20 years of working with my old 74 Chevy and I never once left it in gear and got out. This feature MUST be disabled as I will not tolerate it; I am going to try bluebull's suggestion tonight.

I'm glad I found this post. Only had my truck for 2.5 months and backed up to my TT two weeks ago . . . horn going off and the lights flashing I thought I hit the panic button by accident. Put it in reverse again, and same thing. I started looking for a short, because I had just wired up my break controller . I would have never thought this was done on purpose. At least I know what is causing it. While I was backing up, my wife came out of the house becuase she thought I was honking for her in a rude way . . . this one upgrade is going to ruin my relationship with my neighbors and my marriage

This recall kinda makes me mad... maybe I do not understand it. From what my recall notice said, it seems to me that DC is just putting a band-aid on the problem. " Oh, your truck may slip out of park because we didn't make it right, so instead of fixing it, we'll just make the horn blow and make you look stupid. Oh, by the way, once we do it, even though we won't tell you that we are doing it, (because who in their right mind would want their horn to honk like crazy at 2 in the morning when they are trying to go to work), when you bring your truck in for regular maintence, we can't un-do it. Sorry!!"
I like Dodge, don't get me wrong, but some times I think that they have some pretty bad " De de de" ideas.

I would rather have my eyeballs poked with a rusty nail than get that crazy thing installed on my truck. It seems that they could have thought of something a little better. I agree with Madhat Dodge sure screwed this one up. If they made it with a defect they should fix it.. not a band aid solution that is useless.

*** PLEASE MAKE THE HONKING STOP - I CANT STAND IT!!!***

If I had known when I bought my truck that the first time i backed up to a trailer it was going to do something that STUPID i might have almost drove on down to the ford dealer. Well - maybe not quite, but it would have crossed my mind.

The people that sit at a desk and design this crap but have never driven a truck in their life really tick me off. Thier probably the same ones that walk up to you at the gas station while your standing next to the diesel pump filling your truck up and say "Nice truck - does it have a Hemi?"

"Nope. Just a little six-cylinder." Here's your sign.

I guess you guys are gonna have to learn to use your mirrors. I drove big trucks for a few years and it was immediate firing if anyone was caught backing with the door open (2 different companies that operate 48 states).

It just a sign of the "sue anyone for anything" times. It wouldn't surprise me that this "warning" will become standard throughout the industry in a couple years.

my biggest gripe is trying to hitch the trailer up, i get out to check alignment, height of the trailer, how close or whatever, and have to shut the door to back up 2 or 3 feet.

and sometimes, i will hook up late at night, after we run our errands (truck is family vehicle) and so at 11:00 my neighbors don't want care whether Dodge or Mr Z can't design a decent shifter.

it's just stupid. there are TOO many times that you have "some reason" to have the door open.

Jus Crusin, That is NOT the answer to this problem. I have pulled trailers
for over 30 years also. We should not have to FEEL like a CRIMINAL
in our own truck if we have to open the door.

Get a gooseneck hitch, you never have to open the door again
