My truck doesn't smoke, Should it?

Should my truck have black smoke under load or acceleration? I read on hear that others trucks smoke. I have had some white smoke in the mornings when it was really cold, but not now that it has warmed up. The truck has 49k on it. Milage is around 13-15mpg 60% in town 40% freeway driving. Just wondering if there is anything I should worry about.

depends on what you want. A stock prolly will not smoke. Black smoke is a product of un-burnt diesel. You get this when you start adding power and the turbo takes a minute to spool. SInce it takes the turbo a lil longer to spool, then the fuel does not have enough boost (oxygen) to burn completely, which produces black smoke.

SO If you start adding horsepower by aftermarket boxes/chips then you might start seeing black smoke.

we love the smoke hahahahaha

My 03 stock did not smoke, with the mp-8 it does. Now my grandpa's stock 06 with 3k miles will smoke quite a bit when you're workin it like gettin on the freeway or something.

Trade it in for an '06 if you want smoke......

I could not make my stock '03 blow smoke, no matter how hard I tried. The '06 I have now is also stock and you can just goose it going down the road and get a nice little black cloud in the air behind you. If you really stand on it, ...... WOW is all I can say.

My 04 will smoke pretty decent, even with the auto. And I'm not even running WMO. Yet . At a light, give her 1/4 throttle, let it shift maybe once, then get into it (dont spin tires), wait for the turbo to catch up then . Smokes like a bingo queen halfway thru the jackpot game waiting for o-71!

your guys 03's don't smoke pretty much for the reason of not having a cat. My 03 didn't smoke at all but my 05 will when driving normal for some time then stepping on it. I believe its the soot getting built up in the cat and then getting cleared under hard acceleration...

Cat ? What cat ? My 06 seems to have lost the kitty...........the same time I hit the bump in the road where the stock muffler fell off.....They really should make the exhaust stronger............they fall off way too easy !!

I would agree with horsehauler on this one. I had been driving my truck on the tow/economy setting for about 3 or 4k and I switch it back to stock to tow. Mine seems to get about 2 or 3 mpg better towing on stock. I'm guessing that the black smoke is from the injectors getting really hot and clearing all that junk out.

Mine smokes a bit under hard acceleration, but I live at a 6,000 - 7,000 altitude, so that may make a difference.

I don't have a cat on mine, and she'll smoke like a champ in 3rd and 4th gear every time. Just put it in 3rd, step on it hard at around 1400rpm, and wait for the turbo to spool. When it does, enjoy yer smoke cloud. The idea is to dump a bunch of fuel before you have a lot of boost. That way, when the boost kicks in not all of the fuel gets completely burned; thus making a bunch of smoke. It also helps if yer at high altitude or if yer air filter needs to be replaced. My filter needs replacing, so she's smoking a bit more than normal, but she'll do it with a fresh filter too.

My 06 will smoke on any hard acceleration. I dont even have to stop, just gun it and the cloud starts pouring out.

I don't see any smoke until I have it turned up to 100 on the ol Xzillaraider. I think it does it more when my filter is dirty. Even on 100 it only smokes for me on maybe the first two using gears(2nd, 3rd), And I have to more or less dump the clutch and press on the rpm maker pedel in that order, and it only puffs for a second. I guess I have the right amount of air intake to fuel ratio. I think the main deal on electronic performance making smoke on our 3rd gens is stock the fuel map is set up to rise X amount of fuel for every Y amount of turbo spool (boost, something with the turbo). Then you put boost fooling on with a box and then it will smoke because it is not waiting for it to spool up. On the 600's I don't know what the deal is on the smoke unless it is only on the stock 06's then it has a bigger turbo (I think; it is different anyway) so it spools different and they might not have taken that into account on the fuel map, or they have so it will spool faster.

Black smoke on quick accelarations

Is it normal to get a cloued of black smoke when you punch the accelerator while cruisin.
