Is my fuel pump the problem?
Is my fuel pump the problem?
I'm trying to research this and am having trouble figuring out exactly which is the fuel pump and which is the lift pump and if I actually have one of each. My 03 305 hp 180,000 miler suddenly started stuttering so hard it was like a complete loss of power. Needless to say, when it does it, it feels like the truck is shaking apart. I have always felt like I've had a lot of drivetrain slack and wonder if we have u-joint issues. Anyway, it did it for about the last 10 miles of my trip intermittently (mostly it ran great in between stutters). Sometimes it was a very light stutter that really was more like a decrease in power/slowness in accelerating. I replaced my fuel filter which was so overdue for a change I won't say how long it was, but that didn't fix it. I have the type that bolts onto the back of the filter instead of the retrofit to in tank. I can probably tackle changing that myself, but certainly can't do the retrofit myself, which also is apparently way more expensive.
First thing I saw on here was a fuel pump ad interestingly enough and quickly saw where there are issues with them. It was for the Fass but it was also about $325. I can get a pump off Rock Auto for around $100. Is this actually the fuel pump that attaches to the filter or is it the lift pump? Do I have a lift pump? If so, is it in the tank and will it have to be replaced also, thus essentially making me go with a retrofit kit? Apparently the oem is a Carter so I probably want to go with a different brand don't I? I'm not throwing any codes to give me any clues. I will provide a you tube link for you to see but you really can't hear the engine, only seeing me jerk when it cuts out. The flickering on the odometer is a camera compatability thing I believe, because I do think I would have noticed it doing all that flickering in real time. What say ye? Oh yeah, I have the 6 sp manual if it makes any difference and 3500 QC SRW short bed 2 wheel drive.

Sounds like the lift pump. Mine just went out again at 304K miles.
Look behind the fuel filter. the lift pump on my 04.5 is bolted up to the back of the fuel filter. Easy change. Got mine at Genos(carter).

Thanks, I decided to avoid the Carter. Didn't need to spend as much as I did but just ordered the FASS DDRP since I figure it will hold up well and I really don't plan on upgrading the injectors/hp or anything. I just hope this is the right fix.
