Apparently there is some sort of freeze plug problem on some 600 engine blocks!

Does anyone have more info on this latest problem. I was the first person to post the hesitation problem with the 600 on this site. My truck was reordered and should be here mid May. I need a good reliable truck to serve my needs. I sure do hope this latest problem gets straightened out. All I need is to reorder for the third time! I am patient but not that patient! I am starting to wish Toyota made a 1 ton Diesel truck. Of course it could have issues too......

 

I am beginning to wonder myself,I dont think we can depend on any of them Dodge,Ford or Chevy.
Now there are supposed problems with the 48RE,why can't they get this stuff right

 

I read the thread and it started as a supposed "block heater" problem. Coolant loss is easy enough to check or even see under the truck. Even the temp gage in the dashboard would show a problem. Guess I missed the problems with the 48RE, also. Perhaps I'm just too stupid to worry about all these things. People with Fords or Chevys that I know don't seem to have all the problems I see posted on other websites either.

 

Recieved a call from the dealership today about freeze plugs. Mine was built in January. Apparently there might be a leak where the freeze plugs are located, they said that they will have to perform a pressure check on the block and go from there. I don't know what go from there means. Will keep you posted. I have a appointment for Monday.

 

This one has me a bit concerned also. No call from my dealer yet.

 

If you were provided the recall ID/number couldn't just pull it up on the web site like we all did on the two recalls on the 48RE? Nat

 

Mine was buit in early January and I had to have a new thermostat gasket replaced. Mine was leaking coolant. I'll have to make sure I keep an eye on my coolant level now that it's heating up.

 

UPDATE: Called Cummins 1-800-DIESELS. They didn't know about the freeze plug problem. I left my contact number and a couple minutes later they called me back with some information. They talked to their Chrysler contact and they advised that under the "right" conditions a few freeze plugs blew out. The dealership needs to perform a pressure check with the coolant. They rev the motor up to obtain the maximum pressure and see if there are any leaks. If you did have a leak or a blow out, your motor wouldn't be cooled and would burn up, thus resulting in a new truck. They said that they only had a couple of engines with this problem. Cummins said that if you don't have a leak during the test that there shouldn't be anything to worry about. We'll have to see if this becomes a problem in the future...

 

Shawn, where did you notice the leak. This is so reminiscent of my Ford it is scary. A month after I owned that, I noticed my coolant level down. It was - you guessed it - a bad thermostat gasket. Then, last summer, the freeze plug.

I guess I'm really going to have to take note of my coolant level,and keep my eye on it. I used to have to do that with my V10 and my Ford, and now this truck too. I would like to have ONE friggin vehicle I didn't have to check under the hood once a week to make sure nothing is leaking!

 

Mine was bad enough it was spraying coolant all over the engine thats how ai noticed it. It was most noticeable on the front of my exhaust manifold.

OK, that is pretty obvious. My Ford there was no sign of any leakage anywhere. Looks like yours was really spraying.

Back to the topic, it looks like we're all going to have to keep an eye on our coolant levels until this situation gets straightened out, or we get a list of affect VINs, or something.

 

and what is a "freeze plug"?

 

Its a metal plug, looks like a cup. If you look at your head on the exhaust manifold side you'll see a whole series of the freeze plugs rougly a quarter in size. You have these in various places in the block. Some larger then others.
