Question Miles Per Gallon

I have a 2004 3500 dually, cummins, automatic with a 410 rear end. I am getiing about 16 mpg on the highway empty and about 11.5 loaded. My 99 3/4 ton was much more fuel efficient. Is this about what others are getting or should I be looking for a problem?

Sounds about right for a dually auto with 4.10. Changing the driving style (like slowing down) may have a slight gain in economy.

My .02...I drive 6K miles per month plus and I can tell you that I must keep it at or below 2K on the tach or I pay for it. If I run at 1800 I get hand figured 18.8 and if I drive at 2000 I get right at 17.7. That puts me at 73 mph at 2000. If I can get 17.7 in a 2500 quad with the power that the 5.9 has I am jumping for joy. Just a little rpm increase means that it costs me over 1 mpg.

I'm getting 18-19 running empty, 14 pulling my small 5th wheel and/or 4-horse trailer, 12-13 pulling my 13-14K GN flatbed with a load, and 10-11 pulling my 32'x8' GN 3-horse with LQ. Those are all hand calcs. I suppose my average speeds are between 60-65mph, rpm is around 18-19K.

Sounds about right to me.

I'm at:
20 cruising @ 60mph (1800rpm)

16 weekly mix driving

10 - 11 towing 13K @ 60mph - 70mph

All hand cal. Overhead is 5mpg over.

Was your 99 a dually? Did it come stock with 305 hp/555 tq at the wheel. Have you weighed your rig compared to the 99 3/4 ton? The only problem is comparing two totally different rigs. For comparison my 2500 4wd 03 305/555 got 19=21 hwy and 16-18 city when stock. Now with my mods it is 1 to 2 mpg better hand calculated filling the tank to the brim happy new Year

I have been averaging ~18.5. Since the Smarty Beta, I'm right at 20 running 75.

This is the first thread on MPG that I actually believe. All the #'s sound right on. Congrats on being truthful!!
