MAP readings

Hello All,

I have a stock 5.9. I recently added an Edge Insight. I noticed that under wot I see boots of 33 lbs and the map runs up to 43 or so. The stock alert is set to 40. I have not towed up a long hill yet but that is coming soon.

What I am wondering is what should I expect from the MAP reading? Should I bump up my MAP alarm to 45? Or do I have some other issue?

I have the same unit, and have wondered the same thing. I get the same warning when under load, and have bumped my warning up to 43 just so the alarm will stop sounding. I have not been able to find out what is too much manifold pressure.

maybe this may help you.

i have a Quadzilla on my 99 that picks up boost reading from the map sensor. when i hooked it up it read 46 PSI all the time. i also have a Freightliner boost gauge on my pillar post, so i was able to see the Quadzilla reading was way wrong.

i bought a new map sensor and now it works, but it is off compared to my manual boost gauge which i belive to be more accurate.

I'm not so sure the map sensor was intended to be exactly exact?

The MAP sensor takes into account atmospheric pressure, which is 14.7 lbs at sea level. Boost gauge have been calibrated to indicate actual boost and not include atmospheric pressure.

I do not have an Insight monitor or a third gen truck so take this for what it is worth.

What MikeyB is saying is that normal atmospheric pressure is 14.7lbs at sea level. The insight is reading the map sensor so the map sensor is seeing the 14.7 lbs plus whatever boost is being generated. eg 14.7 atmospheric pressure plus 30lbs boost pressure equal 44.7 lbs map reading vs your boost gauge which is not accounting for atmoshperic pressure will read just the 30psi boost pressure. Your map sensor may be bad or it may be just the way the trucks software reads it and it is correct.

I have an 01 truck and do have an Edge Juice with Attitude. It does get its boost pressure through the ecm (ie map sensor) but it does not do as you describe. It reads virtually the same as my boost guage (off 1 or sometimes 2 psi). I do not know whether the different model year trucks use a different method for calculating the MAP (one may use a map sensor based on absolute pressure vs ambient pressure, or the sensor is the same and the truck software does the calculation within the ecm or if the difference is taken care of within the Edge unit itself.

MAP sensors can go bad mine did several years ago. I do not know about the 3rd gen trucks but you may be able to find the electrical values for the sensor and test it under various pressures to verify whether it is accurate or not before replacing (x amount of volts or resistance for different pressure levels).

Might be worth a call to Edge tech support you would think they would know how they programmed the unit and how it works.

Again I am unfamilar with the Edge Insight and 3rd gen trucks so I may be all wrong.

okay, thank you. That answers my question. I think the concern/question of the OP and myself was that the Edge CTS is set by the MFG to warn us at 40. (so we think we are doing damage at this point) But 40 comes in pretty quick when under load (26# boost) I feel that now we should be able to bump this warning up to about 44 and be at a safe level.

Turn the stupid map sensor alarm off on the insight, this question keeps coming up. The alarm means nothing, it shouldn't even be monitored much less sent to alarm. It causes everyone to panic and start looking for a problem. Their is no problem but the fact edge decided to monitor a peramiter that means and does nothing for us.
Not trying to be a jerk but turn that stupid alarm off and drive it like you stole it.
