Major tranny problems! Please Help!!!!
OK, tranny is a 48re with triple disk converter and a few other simple mods. I parked truck about a month ago, and it ran fine. got in today, and after jumping truck(its 20 degrees here), started to go, and........made it about 250 feet and instantly slipped out. Shift linkage does feel a little weird. Sometimes it wont shift to park.(gets stuck in reverse position) I nursed it back to its parking spot by turning truck off for awhile and then re-starting, putting in reverse and idling bout 50 feet, then shut off again for a minute or two, then 50 more feet and do it again. stepping on gas results in immediate slippage. all bands in tranny were replaced 2000 miles ago with no issues after. the weirdest thing is the way the linkage feels, and how i had to turn itoff and on again to limp back almost like something electrical had to cool down. also bear in mind the temp here is below freezing (could somethin be frozen?) Please help. im stranded right now!

ok thanks for the replies guys. heres an update. still same problem and my day went to crap so notime to drop the pan. did check for codes, and none yet. did warm it up in nuetral and fluids fine. (no burnt smell and nice color) Really interested in the jammed shift valve idea. what causes that and how do i fix it. also wondering if the cold could have somehow clogged upthe filter. Or if the dead batteries could have something to do with it. Could the jumping process have burned something up? I just dont think the trannys burned up.

It sat for a month and potentialy drew moisture then it turned cold and thats all she wrote. There is nothing electrical that will preclude the truck form moving, even stuck in drive it will move although quit slowly.

Pretty sure it may be worth your while to drop the VB and clean it out. While thats being done checking the valve action can be done. It only take s avery small piece of crud to make things not work at all in the VB.

Just an FYI, I had a 99 that dropped the band lever right as I got home. Went to put it into park and no go. The lever had fallen down and got caught on the rooster comb inside and prevented it from going into park. Also when that happens, you have no band apply for 2nd gear. Not sure about reverse, but you will have to drop the valve body and back out the adjustment screw to put it back together.
Just a thought. Sounds like it may be it since your shifter feels funny.

ok, got another clue i hope. its been so cold here i havent dropped the pan yet, but i warmed it up and checked fluid again. it was showing way too high on the dipstick, but i absolutely know that it wasnt overfilled ever. is there anything that can happen that would cause the fluid to bottleneck or pool like that? i really appreciate all the help guys. i really need it!

Clogged filter! Make sure your checking in Neutral, at Idle, full operating temp. When was the last time you changed your filter?
I vote for dropping pan, checking band lever, and change fluid and filter!

Be very careful when checking trans fluid. This dipstick setup is notorious for showing full or over full when it is not. The problem is the stick gets splashed by the churning fluid. The best thing to do is check it multiple times and turning the stick each time you stick it. Look at both sides of the stick and always use the reading from the lowest side.
