Lubricate front drive shaft fitting?

Service manual states to lubricate the front drive shaft fitting... anyone have a general idea of where the zerk fitting is or if there is one at all? I hit the two on the outer tie rod ends, but must have over looked this third one...

Thanks,

Tony

Right Here

There very hard to spot. mine has grease on it, or you'd see the little hole. It's not a standard grease zerk, it's just a depression with a tiny ball and hole. You will need a needle fitting (but not the real sharp type) to put grease in it. There's somebody on here witha better picture than mine, but it gives you a general idea.

the picture is me laying on the graound, head at oil pan, feet at rear drive shaft, looking at the front drive shaft.

Help me out here guys. I located the round fitting on my truck, but I do not understand how to grease it. Thinking it might be spring loaded, I pushed on it with a small screwdriver, but it does not move.

You mention a needle fitting. What is the make and part number of this fitting?

Thanks

Glad I could help. yes it's a pain. When I found mine it was covered in paint, so I had to scrape it off and then I could poke it in. All I know is the needle is around 6 inchs long, 1/4" o.d. with a little needle. It attachs via a grease zerk, but I just went to wallys and bought a little grease gun and screwed it onto it "hardwired" figure why mess with it and another gun. I'd take a pick but all my stuff is packed for my move.

I tried lubing my front drive shaft with the NAPA fitting described above, and only ended up thrashing the tool. Any other tool recommendations?

EDIT: found one here:

The 'other" site's magazine recommends Napa# 715-1213

Hmmm, that one's available locally and looks better suited to the job. Thanks!

I ended up buying the same adapter I linked to above, but from NAPA and for $4.99 instead of $27 shipped.

Got it home, tried it out, and it still wasn't able to get any grease past the check valve. What's the deal with this thing? Any veterans with advice on this one?

Yeah, I agree, this site has helped me a lot too.

But instead of coffee, I want a beer.

I never get a comfortable feeling greasing those things, I'm sure more grease squirts out around the fitting than what actually goes into it, if only that cross member weren't there...

I'm positive that none of the grease I tried pumping in there actually went in. It should come out at other points and it didn't for me. I'm still trying to figure out a better technique or tool to use for the job.

I used the tool as recommended by John in this thread (you have to subscribe to the board to see the pics, but it's a good board anyway):

I'd like to change that zerk fitting out for a male one.
