A lot of white smoke
A lot of white smoke
I replaced the intake gasket on my truck today. I fired it up after I was done and let it idle for a while. I took off down the street and white smoke was pouring out of the exhaust. It would hardly run then stalled. I cranked it until it started and it smoked so bad I could not see anything. I got it home and by that time it was cleaning up then sat there and idled like nothing happened. I decided to try it again, a block away from the house it did it again. I got it back home and pulled the filter and drained the diesel out and put pure power service in it. Now it acts ok. I haul commercial and dont want to take off and have this happen is there anything else I can check out?
watch the coolant level. That white smoke could be from coolant getting into your cylinders. Coolant makes it a tough start and lots of smoke. Maybe a slight leak in the head gasket letting coolant in while shut down. Next time your truck is cold take the rad cap off, start it and get it to operating temp. You may see bubbles for the first ten minutes, after that if it keeps bubbling like crazy you could have compression getting in to your rad through a cracked head or torn head gasket.
edit. oops for some reason i thought you said head gasket not intake gasket. My idea just got a whole lot less likely unless you bolted that intake on so tight you cracked something.
