Locking rear axle problems...How to check?

On my rig the locking rear axle seems to be not engaging as it should be in the snow.

I was wondering how to check the rear axle to see if the locking mechanism is any good.

I know with my auburn pro unit in my 67 mustang you just need to leave one axle on the floor and if it takes anything less than a certain foot pounds to break the lock between the drive axles (measured by a torque wrench) it is time for a rebuild.

Also, I know some locking axles do not permit one axle to spin forward and the other backward. While in the air and in gear I can spin one axle forward and the other spins back.

Now sometimes it will engage. Other tiems a one tire fire, expecially if one wheel is on the snow and the other is on the dry surface. Just isnt in any way a relable engagment.

If it need sa rebuild (the rig is still under the 7/70 drivetrain me thinks), what should I be looking for on the DC recept to make sure it was performed correctly.

Thanks for any help.

Ron.

It's not a "true" locking diff, it's just a worm geared limited slip so it will never lock up.

Hummin,

Do a search on the topic. This has been covered at length. Bottom line: When one wheel has almost no traction and is spinning, tap the brake lightly or the parking brake lightly and it will put much more power to the high traction tire. Just a tap seems to be all it needs to "wake up". When you have higher traction it works invisibly.
