During warm up on a cold start the light in the truck if i have the door open goes dim and then brightens up. Its does this over and over untill the engine warms up. Is this normal? The battery guage is going up so I do not see a problem there. Just wondering if this is normal?

 

Well, if they're using the same type of manifold heater my old Cummins (Gen 2) used - it's just the large current draw of the manifold heater cycling on and off.<br><br>I used to really notice it at night with the headlights dimming and brightening when the engine was cold.<br><br>Best to y'all<br>Bill

 

Yes it is normal and I believe UTAH's explanation was correct. It talks about it in the owner's manual, but I don't have mine in front of me right now. I remember reading about it though, and I also notice my truck doing the same thing.

i am in agreement with the whole manifold heater sucking out the juice till it warms up, but, I made my trip to NC and after driving 423 miles, i stopped to fill er up again and noticed that the lights were doing it. If it just till it warms up, then why does mine do it after it is warm? Just a little question for ya'll.

I just had the same periodic dimming this morning. I was in North Florida where it had dropped down in the 40's overnight. Left the hotel in the dark and noticed the lights dim, then bright, then dim at intervals of about 15 seconds. This lasted about 2 minutes or so, then quit. Then, I remembered this thread. I would have to say it must be something in the heaters. Sure never happened in South Florida - - only have to worry about the AC working right. <br><br>Bob

 

www.psdieselproducts makes an intake heater by-pass, the product senses when the water temp is 160* (I think) and by-passes the heater cycling, less wear on the batteries, alternator, and grid heaters as they draw like, 130amps.
