Seeing as yours is an 04 with the filtermounted pump you should be covered under the 100K Cummins portion of the warranty. But a note here, you are covered for 5 years or 100K no charge, over 5 years (from date of inservice) to 7 years then there is a $100 deductable for the in tank replacement pump.
Many dealers will try to tell you you are responsable for the $100 no matter what so be aware of the 5 year issue. Iif under 5 years with no deductable many dealers try to tell you it is under the 7/70 part with the automatic $100 deductable, just remember it's under the engine warranty, not drivetrain.
If mostly stock then the in tank is usually more than adequate, but if any mods then it's a crap shoot. Quite a few seem to support up to 50-75 extra HP and some just cover the stock engine. That is why many say don't do the in tank but if cost is an issue like it was for me on my 04.5 it worked fine with my 65HP Quad towing box with no more fuel pump issues and under warranty no charge, just had many other fuel pressure issues not related to the pump replacement issue. Dirt and other things probably but not the pump itself.

Good luck and hope you get on the road soon.

Good news! The dealership in Ashland, VA called and stated that the parts (pump+harness) are on the way and that the truck should be finished by mid-afternoon. They stated that the repair would be covered under warranty except for the $100 deductable. The service guy stated that there would have been no charge if the failure would have occurred under 50k miles. They are going to siphon the tank and drop the tank to install the intank pump. After being stranded since Sat. and taking a $203 hit on having the camper towed to a campground($80 so far), I'm pretty happy to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I guess I will argue about the $100 when I get to the dealership after my truck is finished.

Definitely argue, My truck had almost 79,000 on it and the Cummins emission warranty covered it all, 5 years/100,000 miles.

As above 5 years and 100K no charge. Your only issue should be the in service date of your truck. If less than 5 years it's under the Cummins engine part of Dodges warranty and should be no charge. If in doubt call the Dodge Customer (Dis)Service line and they should confirm that it is a covered warranty item no charge. It is a Cummins part as long as it is still the pump attached to the fuel filter. Something many do not realise though is once it is changed tot eh in tank unit it is now a Dodge part and only covered by the Dodge warranty. Just a footnote I guess.

Are the in-tank pumps as good as an aftermarket lift pump?

I would assume the aftermarket ones are better, and many have excellent filters as well.

On my 04.5 I went over 40K after teh change to in-tank with no pump problems. Other problems yes, pump problems, No. It seems to be a volumn issue, the in tank pump needs to supply a certian volumn of fuel to work properly and if I remember correctly the in ttank pump requires fuel to cool the pump so for those of you that run the tank quite low it may be a problem, if 1/4 tank or so then you should be OK. Guess that is just my opinion though.

My truck is now sitting at a Milford, DE dealership, dead again. We towed our camper 200+ miles yesterday with no problems after picking up the truck in Ashland, VA only to have it die again within a quarter mile of our house. My local dealership will look at it sometime after lunch today. They suggested two possibilities:
1. The wrong part# intank kit was installed. There are different part#s for the long and short bed.
2. The truck actually ran out of fuel because the fuel gauge sender was damaged during installation. My truck was dropped off in Ashland with nearly full tank of fuel and picked up the same way.

With the fuel gauge showing a half tank, I make two very sharp turns just before arriving at my house. At the first turn, my truck stumbled and fired back up. This was followed by a straight section where I had no trouble running 65mph with the trailer. After the second sharp turn, the truck died and would not restart. At least this time, a friend came and pulled my camper to the house. Any ideas out there?

You should be good to 100,000 miles.Mine went out at around 60,000 and was replaced with the in tank version. Now have 122,000 and no problems. My tow and truck rental was also covered by Chrysler.Be a PITA it usually helps.

Not trying to be a trouble maker, but now you may find out how bad Dodge warranty service can be. If the current failure is related to the yesterday repair Dodge says you need to return to the original dealer who did the repair. Yeah I know, you were traveling and it's hundreds of miles ago. It would depend on the prior dealer, he may have to reimburse the new dealer. Ask me how I know....Serviced in Michigan, CP-3 replaced, arrived in Florida and Fan came off motor, causing much damage. Florida dealer wanted $1800 up front for repairs and informed me that warranty was with original dealer not them as it was poor workmanship that caused the fan failure even though truck only had 24000 miles on it. The story goes on but with the intervention of my son, a Dodge general sales manager and the Michigan district manager and the Florida district manager the Michigan dealer sent a $1500 check to pay for the repairs and I got truck back. Was not a fun experiance but it eventually got fixed properly. As an aside they also paid for the convertable we used (Florida/Convertable/good weather) for the handful of days for the parts to be ordered and repairs to be completed. It was a real pain in the kester but eventually got done. Hope you do not have to deal with this issue but thought I'd try to fore warn you of the possibility. I had to ask Dodge to have the Michigan dealer supply a flatbeat and to tow the truck back to them and then return it to me, yeah, I was sure that would happen, but then they got serious and decided that the Mi dealer would pay the Fl dealer and not have a $5000 tow bill.

Picked up my truck. Dealership in Milford, DE stated that the new intank pump was wired wrong and never actually ran. The tech said that my CP3 was pulling fuel on its own from the tank until it vapor locked at a half tank of diesel. I paid 1 hour of shop time to have the problem fixed. They provided me with documentation of how the dealership in Ashland, VA installed the new intank pump harness wrong. On Monday I will begin the process of recouping the money I paid to the dealership in Ashland, VA. My local dealership also replaced the water pump at no additional cost because it had developed a small leak. Drove my truck approx. 35 miles today with no problems.

It looks like a black roll of quarters on the back of the fuel fiter....most likely yours has this type. From my limited knowledge on the subject , the `04.5 all have them , unless it`s been retrofitted with the intank one at the dealer.

If you didn't notice I said warranty under the Cummins engine part of the Dodge warranty. I did not state Cummins warranty. Dodge has a seperate part for the Cummins warranty and it is stated as engine warranty. There was no implication that it was a Cummins warranty, just that it was a Cummins part and was trying to show that after Dodge replaced it it was now a Dodge part, not Cummins as the original pump was. My differentation was due to warranty language, not to imply Cummins warrantied it. Dodge does differentiate between the 7/70 drivetrain and the engine part of the warranty and if you ever get into a heated discussion with a service writer demand to see the warrannty book and you will find out how it is written in the book and there are definate differences listed, usually by number of months for warranty issues, just some service writers can not read what is written and and are inable to interpert it correctly.
