LIft Pump gone bad? Anyone else!! Need Help!!!!!
I picked up my 04.5 Dodge on Monday from Boston. Drove it to VT to snowboard... on the way home back to NJ goin up the hills in VT starting to struggle goin up the hills..2000 rpm max, misssing backfireing everything..MIL light comes on but doesnt blink no overheat lights come on, no water in fuel gauges come on just nothing...after like 5 more hills and it doin this i decided to give it a rest. I checked the oil, tranny nothing leaking nothing hot at all...I go to start it 20 min later and runs for 2 secs then shuts off...did this 15 times or so ...I then drained the fuel filter and removeed evertyhing looked clean no GEL or water...filled filter with 911 cleaner primed the system and now it wont even run...just cranks...mind you this is 11pm now...leave it at burger king over night...get a hotel...tried one more time in the am ..and nothing...get it towed to a dodge dealership... soon as it comes off the roll back starts right up and the tech drives it into the bay?????
all in all he says i need a LIFT PUMP and he hopes the main fuel system i forget the name of it wasnt damaged...im 5 hours away from home they dont have the part wont get it till next tuesday the 27th and it will be done the 29th!!!...Had to leave my brandnew truck up on NY and get a Ford Focus rental to drive home
I pleaded witht he owner to take one off a new 06 Cummins he said the he tried just so i could get home but he told me they changed the fuel system for 06 and it doesnt match up?? Anybody know anything about that??

A Cummins dealer should have a lift pump on the shelf. Dealer is only sourcing DC's warehouse. That's the good news.
The bad news....DC won't install new engine mounted lift pumps and are opting for the in-tank retro kit. They MIGHT bypass this policy in an emergency.
DC has made this choice due to too many Injector pumps going bad as a result bad lift pumps. Putting a new "achilles heel" puts them at risk down the road for an injector pump. The verdict is still out as to the reliabiity of the in-tank retro kits.
My dealer said the retro kits were also mfg'd by Cummins. This may or may not be true. If true..the "local" Cummins dealer may have one on the shelf.

Not sure if it was 05 or 06 but I heard they dumped the LPs in the tank. The other little bit of good news is its virtualy the same pump! So now when it dumps you will have to drop the tank
to replace it. Looks like you third gen guys are going to have to put a old 12v cam with the mechanical lobe in as well to fix this right. Bad deal you would have figured DC would have been improving this stuff. Sucks.... sorry to hear you got no wheels over Xmas

To the best of my knowledge...it was '05 before the tank mounted pump came into play in the diesel. Standard fare in the gasoline trucks.
Though it's basically the same pump, it could be a major advancement. Electrical pumps have ALWAYS beeen better pushers than suckers. Also the pump is cooled by being bathed in fuel. How often does an in tank gasoline pump go bad? IMHO it's not so much the pump itself as the application.

Well at least I'm not the only one waiting till Tuesday. They said my truck should be done by Wed. Its been sitting at the dealer since Sat night and they just ordered the pump today. He was telling me someting about blocking something off at the engine and replacing a wiring harness?? any ideas what they are doing????

im from Ocean City NJ just south of Atlantic City NJ...I had a hell of a few couple of days. Im just hoping that they can get it complety fixed by thursday. the guys at the dealer were supernice but i still dont completely trust any dealers just yet!!!
05 the pumps came in the tank (like they should have starting back in 98.5). Same pump??? I doubt it. The "on canister" stock style pump is NOT available. "Borrowing the part from a new rig".....not feasable on this one. The kit contains an adapter to replace the old lift pump. A wiring harness that has a relay to feed bat + back to the in tank unit. Your truck has the wiring from the tank unit up to the cab already as it's the same as the gasser trucks. You could have had them try to locate a kit at another dealer and offered to have paid for the overnight shipping. I've had a few customers opt for that over the years.
So J body....are you saying the stock pump for '04 isn't available from Cummins...or that being an '04 it's a warranty item and Dodge dealer couldn't source from Cummins?
If Cummins had one and my dealer couldn't get one till next week and I was without my truck, in a different sate, when I needed it....I think I'd get it approved to purchase from Cummins. Or buy it from Cummins and send DC the bill...sumpin'. There's always options...sometimes they have to be creative.

Newbie here, so don't bash me on the dumb question. But from my understanding, there is a pump that is mounted outside the fuel tank that pushes fuel to the pump mounted near/on the motor, is that correct? So, this lift pump, mounted outside the tank (I am assuming my 03 that I pick up on Tues will have this) goes bad pretty regularly, correct? What about the pump at the motor? And, to correct this, Dodge has gone with just one pump inside the tank for the 05's? Am I getting this right? My truck has 96K on it, should I start looking into replacing it, changing over to the 05 style, or what? Also, what is the cost of this pump? Is there an aftermarket pump that is a better solution? Sorry for the long thread, but I do ALOT of traveling (been to 44 states and counting) and I do not need to be worried about being stranded on the side of the road at 2:00 in the morning because of something I could have prevented. My Ford for example is known for the CPS going bad, so I carried a spare one in my glovebox with a 10MM wrench to change just in case. Thanks for the help guys!
