knocking from CP3 injection pump

I have had a rattle/knocking sound coming from the front of my engine since I bought it. Using one of those stethoscope tools, I pretty much narrowed it down to the injection pump. When the engine is cold, it doesn't do it, when I put it into gear and hold onto the brakes or drive it the knock is there. After it warms up it is there all the time at idle. When I go up in rpm the sound goes away but I can still here a faint ticking that keeps in rythym with the engine. At idle the knock goes with the rythym sometimes but can be intermittent as well. Is this timing rattle? The noise is noticeably loud, meaning you can hear it just standing next to the truck or inside it while at idle. My question is it bad for the truck to do this? Does it mean the pump is going bad? There is no loss in performance, idle is fine (a little shake, but nothing really bad, no worse than my 2 other trucks) fuel mileage is the same, no fuel in oil, no white smoke (lotsa black when I hit the skinny pedal) this just has me at a loss...

Do a search for CP3 timing. If not here, then some of the other forums. Sounds like what you're dealing with. It's not really timing, but...

I've search and searched, realizing it isn't really "timing" but the problem is I don't know what "timing rattle" sounds like...

it is not timing rattle. the pump timing 89 is talking about is caused from the piston in the cps pumping when the injector is not in sync with it causing the cp3 gear and the intermediate cam gear to un-mate and re-mate causing the rattle. it in no way affects performance or life. all you need to do is turn the gear between 30* to 45* from its current position.

It seems that it won't bother anything, more annoying than anything I guess. I'm new to the 3rd gens so i just want to make sure everything is running ok before I hook the old trailer to it. I am going to try rotating the gear in the CP3 and see how that works. We'll go from there.
