K&N air filter

Does anyone use the K&N air filter that is shaped like a cone and drops into the stock air box on an 06. It would seem that this set up looks similar to the Banks without the added cost of buying a whole new box and pipe. Would this filter void a warranty?

I dont know anything about the K&N filter but when I dropped my truck off to get the turbo changed last week the first thing the mechanic said was "good thing you dont have a K&N filter or your warranty would be voided". He was serious.

I ran a K&N on my 97 and three of our ranch trucks for over 200,000 milkes with no problems. I took out the air box and added the KN pt#RE9660 i think thats it it is actually a cone air filter that will do away with the stock box all together. But now everyone is leaning towards the AFE or Amsoil filters I still have K&Ns on my work trucks but I put an AFE on my new ones.

I just installed an Amsoil EaA189 drop in filter in my 06 yesterday. I also drilled about 20 3/4" holes in the bottom of the air box to get some more air to it. I immediately felt a difference when I took it for a test drive. I haven't checked my filter-minder yet to see if it is pulled down like with the stock filter, but I doubt it is.

The Amsoil filter was about $50 delivered to my door. I payed the extra $10 to become a preferred customer for 6 months and saved almost that much with my first order. I think it was delivered three days after I ordered it.

I have a K&N drop in in my 05, it's OK, but I don't think that it's the best aftermarket filter. After all of the developments in aircleaner technology over the past few years, I will get rid of mine. In my opinion, the new nanofiber technology filters seem to be the best way to go for high airflow, and filtering capabilites. With the K&N's there is a human error variable possibility ie. too much oil, not enough oil. Also, it takes awhile to let it dry properly after you wash it and are ready to re-oil it. etc.. Just my .02 I'm thinking about the brute force with an Amsoil or even just an Amsoil drop in.

I have this particular K&N filter you are considering it works ok and I have had other K&N filters in the past with no problums. I quit using it because I am tired of washing filters.

My dealership installed my K&N drop in - so I'm not too worried about my warranty because I can go back and show them where they did it. I got it because I didn't want to spend so much for the AFE right then - that's a lot of money for a tube and a filter. I've ran the K&N for years in my other cars and have had no problems whatsoever....

Wonder what my dealers problem is with the K&N filter? Hard to figure them out. Each dealer seems to have their own ideas about what voids the warranty.

Most dealers don't like any kind of oiled air filter on a diesel as the oil & dirt can get in the turbo if not cleaned and oil properly and that will cause a lot of problems. Oiled filters work good on a gas engines but not always on a diesel engine. A good nano filter will work just as good or better then an oiled filter and cost less $$$ to buy. My $0.02

Who sells these? This product makes the most sense to me for a stock replacement. But I can't seem to find them anywhere.

Edit: I did find them on the afe website finally, and never mind - they're basically the same as the K&N. If they were paper filters I'd buy one.

Edit 2: I think the pro dry S filter is not oiled, so I may get that one.

Edit 3: Ordered one! My birthday is next month and it'll probably take that long just to get here.

I read an article posted on the internet ( so take it for what it is worth) and it details an air filter study done at an accreditted lab, that essentially showed the K&N flowed well, but didn't shine in it's filtering efficiency. I will try to dig it up.

I have one of these in my truck. Its cone shaped and square on the other end to fit the stock airbox. Had it in for 30k and it works great. No dust, filter oil or anything in intake tube as others have claimed. 1-2 mpg gain too!
