Question Just need a simple weight/towing answer...

I have a 2004.5 2500 quad cab CTD 600.

How much total weight can I legally tow using a ball, assuming it's one meant to tow the maximum possible weight for my rig?

That includes the trailer and any equipment on top.

I'm not familiar with all the regulations (GVR, GVWR, GAVW, etc.) so that's why I just need the one number.

Thanks alot,

DT.

Legally up to 10,000 lbs. Must have hitch and ball rated to 10k also!
Over 10k you need truck/trailer registration.

Thanks Rick.

So that means the trailer and anything on top of it ( which does not include any part of the truck itself ) must not exceed 10,000 pounds?

Pardon my ignorance.

Thanks again,

DT.

Fill in your sig data so we can better help you.
Here is some data from DC about a 2500 QC LB CTD:

2005 RAM 2500
SLT, Quad Cab, 4x4, 8 Ft, 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel Engine - 610 lb-ft, 4-Speed Automatic Transmission
With 4.10 Axle Ratio You Can Tow 12800 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating(GVWR)[i]=9000
Payload[i]=1950
Curb Weight[i]=7050
Curb WeightFront/Rear=4358/2692
GAWR[i]Front/Rear=5200/6010
Gross Combination Weight Rating(GCWR)[i]=20000

With 3.73 Axle Ratio You Can Tow 12800 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating(GVWR)[i]=9000
Payload[i]=1950
Curb Weight[i]=7050
Curb WeightFront/Rear=4358/2692
GAWR[i]Front/Rear=5200/6010
Gross Combination Weight Rating(GCWR)[i]=20000

Look for the Equipment Identification Sticker [i] to identify your vehicle's Axle Ratio. If you are unable to determine your vehicles axle ratio, assume you have the numerically lower ratio and can tow

Hopefully this will help somewhat.

I've weighed my truck and with a 6 speed full of fuel without me in it, the truck weighed 7300 lbs. This was before I put the shell on it. So if you have a 6 spd that leaves you about 1700lbs for tounge weight, passengers, and any cargo that might be in the truck. I was bummed that the cargo weight was about the same as a half ton. The newer 6 speed has an aluminum case so it weighs in close to 7000 lbs.

Thanks guys I think I understand it now.

Sounds like GCWR is the weight of the truck and all of it's payload PLUS the weight of whatever it's pulling, and that combined total looks to max out at 20000 pounds.

So I'm good. There's a good chance I'm going to start hauling around a CAT skid-steer and a trailer/dumper. Those top out at ~10k lbs.

Finally filled in mi sig too!
