Interesting Day
Interesting Day
I paid an unplanned visit to my dealer yesterday. Weather had warmed to the low 30's, but I'd had the truck plugged in overnight as it was below zero. Anyway, a normal start and off I went ... For about 200 yards. Then came a hesitation like I was out of fuel, and next a complete stall.
Motor would start and run for a second, then quit. After a bit I got things running, but she was belching black smoke and didn't want to get over 2000 rpm and had little power. I nursed the CTD home and immediately checked for water, then filter and fuel quality. Everything seemed ok.
Next I re-started and headed for the dealer. Engine light was on, but the truck seemed to run well. They checked codes and came up with a rail overpressure fault. It seems there a limit solenoid that isn't always doing its job. New part ordered.
Meanwhile it seems all is ok. Engine light has stayed out and performance is fine.
I'm not complaining. Dealer was more than nice and took the truck in ASAP. I just though I'd share about the problem. I'm still wondering if it wasn't caused by just a bit of ice in the fuel as I'd filled the day before.
Right now the only thing I can say is that should any of you have such a problem, don't panic. Give the truck a few minutes and do a re-start, then another, and another. Drain the fuel bowl no matter if water is detected or not and check the filter. Mine was still white and clean after 10k miles.
Best of Luck!

Thanks for the info NORD! I always like to read about problems and how to deal with them if they get to me. I can also have something to suggest to the dealer if they don't know what to do, which happens often around here.
I had a very similar problem (more than once). After 2 trips to the dealer, it turned out to be a pinched wire under the passenger-side battery. According to the dealer, STAR told them this is not an uncommon problem. It's being diagnosed as a sensor problem or an ECM/PCM problem, then turning out to be this chafed wire problem. STAR told them right where to look.
