I've done it both on my back in the driveway with a buddies truck and on a lift with the proper tranny jack with my old truck.
The lift and tranny jack were definetly easier.
Doing it on the ground isn't that hard though. You will make a mess, it doesn't seem to matter how carefully you drain the pan and the cooler lines. You always seem to get a fair amount of fluid on the ground so be prepared for it.
Jacking the front of the truck up maybe 3" or so will be all that you need to allow enough space to slide the unit (pan on the ground) out from under the truck once it is out. I would pull the transfer case off the tranny before trying to remove the transmission from the motor (unless you are using a lift and a proper trans jack), it's just to heavy with it attached.
I'm not sure how much a shop would charge to R/R a tranny, in a shop envirnment I did mine in like 5 hours (VB and TC install) taking my time.
If you have the money and don't like getting dirty, pay to have it done.
If you are tight on cash and maybe even like grit under the nails and a sense of accomplishment than I say go for it!
BTW, Welcome to DTR!!

If your truck is a 2nd gen getting the crossmember out is half the battle but if its a 3rd gen no sweat. A shop shouldn't charge you more than 4 to 5 hours to r&r the tranny, so dont be fooled into paying for any more. Most good techs can do it in under 4 hours.
Usually runs 350-400 to R&R trans and t/case plus fluid. Where are you located? Maybe a local chapter member or members would enjoy a get together. Buy some beer and invite them to show you proper use of their jacks, sockets and wrenches!

Take him up on it, or pay someone to do it. Doing it the driveway is brutal, messy, and will take a weekend. In a shop it will be cleaner, safer, and take 6-8 hours.

If you near central il let me know. We can do it in aday in the garage "heated". I dont have a lift but i might be able to get it into a garage 4 miles from my house who does. If he has a open stall he will let me use it. If your just swaping tran. Only 4-6 hours Would be closer to six for me im a stickier for detail.
GTX2500,
I'll take you up on that offer...I'm in SA..... I should be getting my fully billet built Georends around the 1st of Mar. I just don't have any extra hands or access to a lift anymore..... I'll even throw in a couple of cases of beer, some cash.... and a lot of gratitude...
