Injector Knock?

Hello All, proud new owner of 2006 MC CTD 4X4 48re. I am not new to diesels but I am new to common rail and CTD's. I came over from a 6.0 Ford and could not be happier so far...

I have around 900 miles on the truck so far and have run one tank of the Cummins approved Chevron stuff through (all I could find in a pinch). I also took the truck out for some break-in loads around here (Phoenix). I went and climbed some mtn. grades and heated her up a little. Sure seems to have helped loosen her up a bit. The noise I am hearing is just like a ping in a gasser and seems to come and go but as of last night I could repeat it by driving with the revs at @1600. It seems to knock a little in the morning but I am chocking this up as diesel noise. Is this something I should have looked into or not yet? Or do you suggest putting a load on it again with some Howe's in the tank. I have a little 3500lb cargo trailer and could load it down and tug it up the mtn.

Thanks in advance and I am glad to be here instead of the Ford Forums!

Injector Knock

Regular use of Howe's Meaner Diesel Cleaner has quieted mine. 4oz. to 30 gallons of fuel. I add a couple ounces each time I fuel up (10 to 15 gallons).

Ping

I have the same sound in my ctd. Some times at about 1600 rpm and then other times between 1800 and 2300 rpm it comes and goes. I 've had the sound since new and now I have 23,000 miles on my truck. Some people say it's the third ejection event that happens with these common rail systems- some noiser than others. I don't know what to think. I've ran seafoam, power service and mmo mix, stadyne and some other stuff and the ping/knock is still hanging around. Even after pulling my fifthwheel around here in the mountains and a large dose of seafoam much more than needed - multiple times has not silenced the ping. I know my injectors have got to be clean. Truck runs awesome gets good highway milage - now around town thats a different story to many lights to race from, idles very smooth, starts every day without hardly a puff of smoke weather its plugged in or not. After the milage I have put on the last two years - 1/3 of that towing the trailer I have come to the point of trying to ignore it. Which is hard to do.........Maybe I'll try the howe's next haven't found it around here yet.

Thanks for the info Tim. I am in Scottsdale and if I can find Howes around here or in Mesa I will let you know. I am a little gun shy of injector problems myself after my Ford puked 8 injectors 6 different times. It always seemed to happen right after I had loaded the truck to the hilt with stuff and really needed it to run. I think it had more to do with the ******* than the truck. I hope this one is better, I know it will be...

BTW the mountain passes up there will test most anything I think, the Phoenix to Woods Canyon Lake run is a good one for breaking in the truck. I see the GM boys up there all the time with the test mules.

Same thing hear. Some times I hear it (most times), other times it isn't there. I think it is the 3rd event though. I just purchased some Injector Cleaner from Dodge (about $4 per can) and it only recommends using every 2500 miles. Upon puring it in, heavy throttle up a 9% (empty though) and seeing my pyro up around 1200* and took it easy after that. Did this a few times and have noticed the motor is a little quieter now. I do not know anyone with a good trailer to hook onto as that would heat things up nicely.

But you might want to give Mopar's stuff a try. I use Power Service (silver & white), MMO, SeaFoam, Lycas. All seem to help a little but this Mopar stuff seemed to be the best so far. Still running the same tank so not sure.

I am in Stanfield, AZ. If you got a gooseneck hitch installed I got a big horse trailer you can make some runs in to break in your truck. I got the pinging deal going too and mine started at the 900 mile mark as well. Honestly, my truck doesnt seem to run as well after that first episode of pinging but I havent had the time to get it to the dealer. The local dealer doesnt have the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so I dont trust them.

Joe

PS. As you can see, I traded in my Power Puke for this one. The only real bit*h I have with my truck is the paint sucks and the bodies ding up like crazy!!!!!!!!!! I honestly have never seen sheetmetal so prone to dinging, not even import mouse traps ding as easy as my truck!
