Immaculate reception - cap lands in fuel tank

So, I was just filling up the truck. I fill until I see the fuel just below the drain/vent hole level in the neck. I pull out the bottle of Lucas additive, remove the little blue cap and set it on top of the tool box while I pour in the amount. Finish pouring and am looking at the bottle to see that I got the level correct. A huge gust of wind blows the blue cap off the toolbox. It bounces off the bottle I am holding in my hand and into the tank.

You have got to be kidding me?!?!!! I watched the little cap sink into oblivion and I'm pretty certain I heard God laugh. I laughed too, at the hugely improbable chance that something like that could happen. I should go buy a lottery ticket today too. Anyway, hop in the truck and drive it the mile or so home.

My questions:

- is the fuel pickup on an '06 in the tank screened?
- will the cap get sucked in?
- can I leave it in there or do I need to drain and drop the tank?

I am still asking, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!!!

Little blue cap

Yes, it is screened. Just leave it in the tank, shouldn't cause any issues.

Fuel pong! I wouldn't worry about it. Folks on here find all kinds of foreign objects in their tanks when the drop them to replace lift pumps or install vent kits. Most of it was probably there from the factory.

Yeah, you're good.

Actually, if it fell down your filler neck, it's still in the filler neck. There is a 'ball' before the tank, an anti siphon device... it would not have made it past that.

Next time I'm in DFW, I'll stop by and pull it out for ya

Do you have one of those long flexible wire grabby thingies? The little 4 claw of death with a red push button on the other end!

Or it's time to do the vent mod

And don't feel bad Shorts... I can totally see this happening to me too

Shorts, you have all the fun. Don't sweat it. As long as you don't roll your truck you'll never hear from that cap again. (And if you do roll it, who cares about that cap.)

Cool - makes me feel better it is up in the neck than in the tank. But random thought, it won't make filling up take even longer will it, clogging up the fill hole? lol

I felt like I was on some prank show with hidden cameras. I was thinking one of those long claw thingies might be the thing to try. I don't have one. Where do you get one of those things anyway? Oh the vent mod - that went through my head too. "Sheesh this job is getting longer" lol

I was thinking about taping a piece of narrower closer hose to the end of the shop vac hose to see if I might be able to suction grab the little thing out of there. If the anti-siphon valve is in place, i ought to be able to snag it. I'm going to double check with just the clear hose first to confirm. No need to suck out the 3.699/gal diesel I just put in.

That's what Mondays are for I guess. And I have been known to roll a truck

If the filler neck is the way I think it is... there is a plastic ball in there slightly smaller than the neck... it allows fluid to go around it, but won't let solid objects in, such at a Georgia credit card (siphon hose)

Is Diesel as corrosive as Gasoline?

I ask because years ago I was changing the fuel pump on a 66 GT on the road and the only thing I had to cap the fuel line while removing/installing the new pump was a ball point pen. The only way to describe the pen immediately afterwards was it looked like it had melted. Makes me wonder if the Diesel will break it down in short time.

No, it's not as corrosive. One thing about today's gasoline though, with the ethanol content that's present it could do the same thing to a 16 penny nail.

Im trying to think what would be better by hooking a shop vac to your filler neck to try and remove the cap or to burn your truck up in your driveway with a vacume hooked to it, would that vacume implode or explode is the real question here.

Be sure to record it,,l hope to see it on U-tube. lol

Just playing with you!

The flash point of diesel is between 125°F and 200°F so the shop vac idea is probably pretty safe. If you have any bio mixed in the flash point goes up to be even safer!

How about a stick with some double sided tape on it? Can you see it? The filler neck is really not that difficult to remove. A couple screws around the cap area flange thing, and a hose clamp for the vent and anther for the filler tube. I took mine off when I installed my lift pump and I don't remember it being any big deal.

lol I'd have a flamer thrower going in the driveway

I can't see the cap. It is way down in the filler neck, closer to the tank than the opening. I stuck some clear hose down in there as a feeler and it came up wet the first 6". But I did feel it stop and it would not go further. So, I' guessing the anti-siphon valve is in place but I don't know exactly where it is (on the hole of the tank or further up in the neck hose).

I'm just going to leave the cap there until it becomes a problem or I feel like goofing with it. As long as the truck keeps running, it is ok. I haven't had any time to try to remove the filler neck.
