Idle in P or N?

The high idle feature on my 06 sure beats the old stick and seat thing.

On cold days I idle my truck for short stops. 5-20 minutes. From what I understand it is better to do this then to shut it down then re-start each time.

Is it better to idle in P or N? Or does it matter?

Leave it in neutral, there isn't any oil moving in park.

Your high idle won't work in N, only P. At least mine doesn't.

Question Idle: Park or Neutral?

I was under the impression that the auto tranny will circulate fluid in PARK but I've been wrong before!

I'm pretty sure the [stock] tranny doesn't circulate fluid in Park. After backing my trailer into spaces, I'll leave the shifter in neutral so it circulates and cools the tranny fluid. The tranny will circulate fluid in Park with an after-market VB. I think the ATS setup allows this.

I can get the high idle to work in neutral too. I think you have to set the parking brake before it will allow the cruise control to enable it. If your foot is on the brake, it won't allow it to be set.

Your are correct, unless Goerand rebuilt your tranny. He builds them to pump in P or N.

Mine works in both P & N that is what made me decide to ask about it. Sounds like N is the way to go. thanks everyone.

My 06 high idle comes on automaticly in N , was cleaning the ice on the windows this morning, in N hand break on, and she bumped up the idle all by her self, takes a minute or two.

LOL that's the custom model where the 9 is too close to the 8 on the keyboard

It circulates the same in park or neutral. From the service manual:

As the engine is running and the crankshaft is rotating, the flexplate and torque converter, which are also bolted to it, are all rotating in a clockwise direction as viewed from the front of the engine. The notched hub of the torque converter is connected to the oil pump’s internal gear, supplying the transmission with oil pressure.
With the gear selector in the NEUTRAL position (Fig. 4), the power flow of the transmission is essentially the same as in the park position. The only operational difference is that the parking sprag has been disengaged, unlocking the output shaft from the transmission case and allowing it to move freely.

wow, some useful, definitive information with a listed source to back it up. There's something you don't see everyday in an internet forum

Thanks for the info.
