I killed a customers truck!

First fuel filter change in 50k on a 04 and his lift pump dies so now it's my fault it got towed in. Feel fortunate that you are enlightened by a site like this and not driving blindly through life with your CTD.

You gotta be kidding......

It's all you fault that you changed out that nasty, crungy filter and let all the clean fuel now enter the motor, causing undue stress to the fuel pump, causing it to claim workmans comp, and go on strike

every time i break that seal on my fuel canister i just hold my breath for as long as it takes to get the new filter cliped on and screwd down and i dont breath till the truck starts again LOL. The last fuel filter i just did i had a brain fart and did not wait for hte lift pump to stop running and just waited for the wtsl and it ran then died and my heart sank but to my dismay i got it restarted with out cranking injectors

call me terrible but my old truck had 36k miles and never a new filter. Ran great, no problems. My buddy has a 04.5 and he changed his filter at 100k miles and it was ok. Hes a hotshot driver and now has 250k miles on the stock lift pump, on his 3rd filter.

Well I bet he fixed the open elbows on top of his tank and stoped all the crud from getting into his fuel tank to start with.

I have those "elbows" plugged off on my tank also. What the heck are they there for anyway. Mine started leaking when I put an auxiliary tank in the bed.

How often should you change the fuel filter. I'm coming up on 15k and was gonna do it then along with all the other stuff. Is this too long to wait?

My buddy did the same thing, 35000 miles and finally a new fuel filter. Then a week later a new lift pump.

The elbow bolts directly to the back of the turbo and then the exhaust pipe to it.05s have a 4 inch elbow.03/04 had a 3.5. Your good to go.I swapped mine to a 4 inch, came with a 3.5.

On top of the fuel tank are 2 90 degree vents. They are sitting in the middle of recesses where water can collect. Some have had issues with water/dirt coming through these vents and into the fuel tank. You can take some 3/8 fuel line from each valve, run them to a tee and then vent it down so no water can get in. Some guys have even put a small breather filter at the end to make sure nothing gets in.

They are present on all 3rd gens.

done that myself, but never crack the HP lines on these engines... not needed and can be dangerous.. they will bleed the air on their own. 7,000 psi [about that at start up] will clear the air quickly [bleed through the injector return passage back to tank].
