on my 04 cummins i am having bad oil smells coming from mostly the turbo side of the engine. When I bought the truck in august of 05 the dealer claimed that it had delo oil in it. I never smelled oil at all. the dealer gave me my first oil change for free and I had delo put back in it. ever since, I have been smelling it. I have looked all over the engine and cannot find any oil leaks or puddled oil. one dealer said it was coming from the blow by tube coming of out of the head. I have been checking the oil and it seems to be staying in the same spot. I recently changed to amsoil synthetic and it still smells. this couldn't be normal could it? I can't seem to get any help from the dealers they just say that it is supposed to do that but none of my buddies trucks smell. it is really kind of annoying. anybody have any advice?

 

Try doing a search for "smell" and "oil". This is a common problem. I haven't had the problem but I've read the solution is to lengthen the breather tube down and under the cab. Some owners also sealed the fresh-air intake from the engine compartment.

It's very common to have a smell after an oil change.
It usually goes away after 100-500 miles.

Brand of oil can weigh heavily on how long the smell hangs around.

I had the same problem when I used delo 400 then I switched to delvac 1300 and the smell is totally gone.

 

with amsoil the smell usually goes away after about 500miles. Also I would suggest lengthning the breather tube. It will take about a 12-15" piece of 3/4" oil rated hose and a hose clamp to let it hang and drip instead of puking on the bottom of the truck!

 

I haven't experienced the bad oil smell either and I have used Delo 400 for 20k miles (4 oil changes) of the 30k I have on my truck. I used Valvoline PB on first 10k miles and no oil smell as well.

I agree that it must have something to do with the vent tube. Also, how are your door seals? Wonder if somehow they are allowing oil vapors to enter the cab under certain conditions.
