****EDIT****

Upon futher inspection I thought I would pass along something that I found out the next day.

While I had the truck in for service I asked them to change the oil since I have a VIP card for free oil changes (which I never use by the way). I had a case of Rotella in the back of the truck and asked them to use “my” oil instead of the oil that they use. It was clearly stated on my work order that “customer has own oil in back of truck”. I picked up my truck around 5:00pm and it was getting dark. I looked under the hood to see the new belt and also to check if they changed the filter (which they did). The next morning I walked out and checked the oil level and to my surprise they didn’t use my oil at all. The oil they used was either the oil that “they” use or they just left my old oil in the truck. It was so black that it looked as if it had been in the truck for several thousand miles. There was 3 gallons of my Rotella missing out of the back of my truck. So someone there has 3 gallons of Rotella oil and I got stuck with something other. I considered going back and complaining but what proof would I have? I drained the oil out of my tuck and put the other 3 gallons of Rotella in my truck. Guess what? The oil is as clear as can be right now! Go figure.

Thumbs up

Well guys I just had my serp. belt changed with 8300 miles. One edge, ( the front) was literally cut parallel with the edge about 1/8" in and there was a track mark on the outside all the way around. It obviously jumped off for awhile then worked its way back on. I tried locally to buy a spare at Napa, Auto zone, and a local parts store ,none in stock, Rare or Used up:?confused: I had to drive to my appt. 60 miles away but made it. After 2 hours they had mine done, new belt, and the mechanic said there was a "nick" on the tensioner pully that he removed filed clean and replaced. Drove back home ,all looks good. seems to take mine 7500 miles before the prob. showed up. Do any of you guys and gals know how hard it is to replace this belt? Can it be done without special tools to flex the tensioner?I'd like to carry a spare now that I'm paranoid.

Thanks for posting. Since mine happened at 5400 miles last August, when I originally posted threads here and on TDR, you are about the tenth of us with an 04-05 "600" that has had this happen.

and the mechanic said there was a "nick" on the tensioner pully that he removed filed clean and replaced
Interesting. Sounds like you got a good tech who actually took the initiative to see WHY this problem happened on a new truck, and not just assume it was the belt that was defective.

I ordered a replacement from Napa, and keep it in the truck. One member here who did his own belt said it is basically a royal PITA to change one of these. My new one has 4100 miles on it now, and so far, looks good. I check it about once a week. First stock vehicle I've ever really checked the belt on at all. I don't really like not trusting it.

Much harder on the 610's becaust of the fan shroud. You have to get the belt around the fan pulley.

Hope the trip to the dealer did not leave too many new blemishes.

I just noticed today that there were 2 pices of the belt hanging from the bottom of my engine. Looks like I have the same problem. I only have 15k miles on my 600

Another one. I STILL want to know why these 600s seem to be belt chewers. Over on TDR, there was a continuation of a shredding thread where two more people had it happen:

So how long before a TSB?

And, like Britt, I check mine once a week now. Don't trust it, which is NOT right on a relatively new vehicle. Rant off.

I wonder,,, when those guys work on their own trucks do they cram their
belt buckles into the paint like they do mine ?
As a technician, I find that these fine scratches do not require anything as heavy or hard as a belt buckle. Draping a dirty trouble-light cord across the paint is all it takes, and some paints are more prone to damage than others. That's why we use fender covers. Even if the fender cover has a bit of grit on the underside, it will do this. Pulling a dirty air hose across the fender on a black vehicle can be a disaster.

My belt looked just like the one in the picture, missing about 1/8". the strand was wrapped around the fan hub. i didn't get any warning. just started it up at lunch and heard som very loud noises. my truck is an 05 built (mar 8) with less than 3000 miles. i dropped it off at the dealer today (saturday). i called them this afternoon and they told me my truck was giving them "all kinds of fits". they replaced the belt and pulled out of the shop and it immediatley slung the belt. then they couldn't get another one on. they think it is the tensioner so now i have to wait until monday. oh, it had a cast iron one tensioner. so far i am happy with what the dealer has done.

Same thing with me. No warning, at 5400 miles last August. I saw your post over on TDR and linked it to another thread partway down the page here.

At least it appears yours has a cause - bad tensioner. Most of us just had new belts put on, dealers that said (at least mine did) that everything was straight and true.

So far............knock ALOT of wood.........my replacement has been good for over 6000 miles now. I don't want to jinx myself, and I do check it weekly.
