They seriously cover a serpentine belt under warranty???
It's not a "wear item" when the truck has only a few thousand miles. Have you not been reading this thread? These are NEW vehicles that are having this problem.

I know belts go, but it should be TENS of thousands of miles before they need replacement.

I think its actually a 3/36 item. Its not listed as bulbs and wiper blades. In facr you may have a bad tensioner also.

I had them check my tensioner, and they *said* it was fine. So, now I carry a spare, and check it weekly. NOT what I want to do on a relatively new vehicle, on an engine one is supposed to trust.

One of the reasons I wanted it in my service record was so that if it recurs, I have record of it for lemom law purposes, etc. I love this truck, but I don't trust it.

When my neighbors went out last week they took a look and said need a tensioner.None in stock in Atlanta depot. One dealer further into NE Ga.said thay had replaced some and usually kept them in stock.belt and tensioner. They had a belt but no tensioner. Both were taken off a new 05 2wd to get my neighbor on the road.He had three horses on a trailer going to Florida.

My dealer had none in stock when they did mine. Maybe there will eventually be a TSB for this if it turns out to be enough problems. I will be interested to hear what T-7's dealer has to say.

Thanks for info, Houndog, hope your buddies truck is OK now.

I'm not disagreeing with you. Of course a belt should go many miles before replacement.
Still, given the service you seem to get anywhere these days I'm surprised D.C doesn't give some nonsense runaround about the whole deal...... You'd be surprised what warranty items get refused. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Is the tensioner on these trucks a D.C item or a Cummins item??? I'm just curious.

Wondering what the outcome will be......
"Bad" batch of belts???
Faulty install from factory? (misalignment?) or bad tensioner?????
Hope they come up with a decent fix.

Thousandas of trucks and autos get warranty repairs daily.Their not going to give anyone a runaround on belts/tensioners.Maybe a bad batch of tensioners(vendor problem) I think there D.C.s not Cummins.

I don't think it could be that, since this is still happening on 05s a year later (mine is a January 04 build); same with the tensioners.

I think it is a misalignment on installation at the factory. As I mentioned, small pulley at the very bottom of the engine on the passenger side, there is NO room for error. The belt's first rib rides right in the first groove towards the front of the engine, and the belt edge is RIGHT there. If it were to be even slightly misaligned (as in the line worker getting tired after doing his 100th one for the day), it will only be a matter of time. This is just my opinion.

When mine went, I insisted on them looking at the tensioner on my truck, dealer *said* he did, and that it checked out OK. We'll see down the road.........

Glad to see it was only a little shred. Guess I'll have to check mine a little more often. Thanks for the heads up.

Here is the Update!!!

Okay guys,

Here is the update. I was at the station yesterday and was under the truck and found 3 pieces of the serpentine belt stuck to various parts of the engine and frame. It finally warmed up enough to where I could get a good look at it.

I took it to the dealer this morning and they gave me NO runaround at all (must be a pretty common problem). My friend, who is a service adviser at this dealership, wasn’t working today but I talked to another one who seemed genuinely concerned about my problem. Left the truck with them about 7:30am. Around noon I received a call from the service adviser updating me on the progress of my truck.

1. The truck was getting it’s oil changed at this time (which I asked them to do, I supplied my own oil)
2. He was checking to see if there has been a TSB on the belt “shredding” the way that mine did.

Pretty through so far!

Called me at around 3:00 pm to notify me that the truck was finished. Picked up my truck around 5:00 pm. Everything looked pretty good (except for a few “small” scratches in the clear coat on the fender). They changed my oil and used “my” oil and fixed my belt.

I talked to the service adviser and he said that they replaced the belt and couldn’t find anything misaligned under the truck. I will have to admit that this belt looks different from the belt that came from the factory. “What” is different about it I couldn’t say. It just looks different. They "said" that they checked the tensioner and it looked fine. He also said that there wasn’t a TSB out yet but he would notify me if there was one in the future.

I wish I could give you guys more information but this is all that I have. The one thing that I do notice is it doesn’t have the “chirp” when I turn off the engine. Other than that, everything seems to be fine.

Like wexman said, I will keep an eye on it about once a week from now on.

EXACTLY what my dealer said, T-7. They could find nothing misaligned, they let mine run a couple hours, etc. Said they checked the tensioner, etc. The replacement is a Mopar belt, but it is crosshatched - the original was not.

Yep, my factory belt chirped like crazy (as do most peoples') , but the replacement does not.

Thanks for the update.

don't know if this helped anyone or not but i hope so.

maybe some of you guys and gals will be able to check your belts a little more often then i did. i know i never checked mine until it started making noise.

i also hope the pictures helped some. if your belt looks like that then you need to rush to the dealership and have it changed.

thanks wexman for all your information. it was very helpful!
