How tough is the G56 overall?

To keep it brief, I have a G56, love banging through the gears. I was wondering how tough this tranny is overall? I've heard alot of good about it.

I am NOT referring to "how much can the clutch handle". More of how much can the geartrain handle, especially if NOT doing alot of towing.

I know that these trannies are used in alot of medium-duty trucks hauling alot of weight around. Many times less stress on the tranny if not pulling heavy loads, so I'm assuming pretty stout for our performance use with occasional light to moderate loads.

Any thoughts or comments?

07 5.9L 6spd here as well. Quick question for you, if you are backing up an incline at low RPM (close to or at idle) or for that matter going up one in low gear (1st maybe 2nd) and you clutch in quickly do you hear or feel a clunking? If my truck were older I would think possible U-joint or diff slopp. With less than 10K miles I am slightly worried, however it has done this since I got the truck so I don't know if this is normal or not.
It also seems that it may be doing this at higher speeds if I let my RPM's drop below 1K during shifting.

Everything I have seen at the diesel events I have gone to they hold up very well. I drove my friends 06 and it shifts like butter. I really liked it and the shift pattern is better, imo. If I ever blow out my 5600, I am going to inquire on a G56 swap. There is one guy here locally that pulls with his. He did blow out 2 of them in a short time but he has a LOT done to his truck and pulls with it cranked up. He said he is in the 650 HP range, I dont know how accurate that is though.

Mine does this and I've read that its due to the dual mass flywheel. There are lots of people running the G56 with a lot more miles on it than we have and they have this happen with no problems. I'm not worried.

Never really noticed or paid attention to that, to be honest. It wouldn't surprise me, though. Big heavy gears with a built-in amount of tolerance, lots of torque loaded going uphill, and then you suddenly unload the driveline by pushing in the clutch and you basically bump the NON-drive side of the ring and pinion into each other.

Otherwise, though, I never noted any abrupt clunk or concerning slack in the driveline.

G56 5.9L Diesel Vs 6.7 diesel

I own a 99 dodge ram 3500 dualy 4x4. I recently Remanufactured my nv4500 in my appartment. I know soon I'll need to replace the clutch. I'm limmited to 11100 lb towing compassity. My fifth wheel is 8600 pounds and I want to load it up with my mechanic tools and my 2700 car behind my 32 ft trailer. With the five speed I'm well over loaded to be attempting to drive threw the Canadian mountains in Yukon when moving back to Alaska. I've looked at installing the nv5600, but they no longer make them so I've been trying to find what it will take to install a g56. Well I'm not only having trouble finding info as to wether the bell houseing and yoke will match up to the engine and transfercase, but just finding a core transmission seems to be impossable. I would love to be able to haul the extra 5 thousand pounds if I can simply find the parts. Does any one know weather the bell housing will match up as well as the transfercase? Also where could I even find a transmission. I've never had so much trouble finding a transmission. Although I did find a used one on ebay. I'm looking for a remanufactured or brand new G56 if any one has an idea where to look.

A company called Bluementhal (sp?) rebuilds NV5600's. Not sure of their cost, where they're located or the availablility. I just remember reading an article about them in TDR. Sorry this isn't much information, but I'm deployed and don't have the resources at hand.

I've got several vendors that are capable of rebuilding them, the problem is finding rebuildable cores.

I think mine has a bit of lash too.I just figured its a big trans and rear end with big gears.
I wouldn't worry about it.
