Well I filled up tonight. Fuel light was on at 366 miles. It took 25.8 gallons to fill up.. 14.1 mpg - All city with AC. Obviously there is a problem with my sender, I basically had 8 more gallons left with my fuel light on. Great...

I have an 06 Megacab 4x4 with about 34,000 miles. My last trip from New Mexico to California (Sacramento) I got 23 miles per gallon pulling an empty trailer.weighin in about 2500lbs empty. So I got just over 720 to a tank. I have minor mods drop in K&N filter and no silencer.

Most of my tanks are in the 620-650. Last tank was 693.. I went 35 miles past when the overhead stated 0 miles left DTE. 38.xx gallons went back in. It was 17.8 on that tank. I have got over 700 a few times when I have more highway than around town. 17s for my average and 19s if I have mostly highway miles.

2004.5 QC LB 4x4 with some mods... Likin it...

My overall average is 13.79mpg, from day 1. My best was 16.3, twice once was 50% freeway back in May and the other was last year on a straight freeway run to tucson & back. Checked it truck stop to truck stop...same one. I'm pretty confident I can hit 17-18, depending on load & distance. Boy, that'd be nice !

I'm a proud member of the 700+ club. I love the vent mod kit. (oh, BTW, that is a very small +)

All I can tell you is that my truck is set to have the sender replaced in the morning. After filling up last friday night, I have driven only about 20 miles since and my needle has moved well off the peg at the full mark.

Now I'm stuck with this old style that doesn't work right for whatever reason, and he probably knew all along. I'd like my fuel gauge to be accurate. I think the real story will be told today after I fill up.

Any suggestions?
What's the new style your talking about for the in tank unit

This is a really old thread..

Originally the 2003-04.5 trucks had an external lift pump mounted on the fuel filter canister on the engine.
This external lift pump had a high failure rate as mine did back in 2004. Starting in 2005, Dodge went to an in-tank lift pump which was much more reliable.
Dodge issued a TSB for the external lift pump failure. The TSB was to install an in-tank lift pump and kit. The in-tank lift pump is integrated into the fuel tank canister which replaces
the old style, non-lift pump, fuel tank canister.

It sounds like Coolslice (2004.5 truck) had his external lift pump upgraded to an in-tank lift pump at one time and then he went back to an aftermarket external lift pump, the FASS.
The in-tank lift pump and fuel tank canister is usually removed or modified when going to an aftermarket external lift pump.
The old style fuel tank canister is actually better when using an aftermarket external lift pump.

In Coolslice's case it looks like his new style in-tank lift pump fuel tank canister was removed and the old style fuel tank canister installed.

I hope all that makes sense!
