Still...is it technically considered IDLING if you're sitting at 1200 RPM's?? What does the ECM consider idling to be?? Is that any RPM as long as the truck isn't moving....or is that 800 RPM's??

hmmm -- good question. This is rather a stretch of memory but I think on the 2nd gens the ECM reports "not moving" whenever the crank sensor isn't active. Just conjecture here but I would expect at the same time, ECM would report rpm as well if there is no change for some x number of seconds. In otherwords, the interpretation would probably be up to whoever reads the data output, rather than the ECM reporting "idle" based on some set of rules. Don't take that for gospel though; it would just make sense to me for the ECM to behave that way

So did you ever hear back from Cummins? I'm curious because what I do it just turn on my exhaust brake. I can see my EGT's go immediately up to about 450-500 deg, and if I run the AC or the compressor, I can get another 50 deg out of it, so I think I'm okay but not sure. I'm curious what Cummins says about idling at 1200-1500 for extended periods.

Indeed. Additionally, it would be great to know their position in particular with regard to using the Jacobs e-brake during warmup. but keep in mind here that engine temperature is not the issue -- that is corrected easily enough in software for very cold conditions, using high-rpms, etc. Even the Pac brake has automatic fast-warmup capability so I would expect the Jacobs brake to allow the same. Anyway, I believe the issue is extended no-load operation and the resulting consequences such as blowby, perhaps carbon buildup, etc.
So yes, please let us know what they say about all this and whether or not we should even worry about it!

Just trying to get more info out of people on this. I have a 01 and I Idle it at 1,300 rpm for long periods during the day and would like to hear some opions on this. 8)
Re:How Long Can The Engine Idle??
have your oil analyzed and consider shortening the drain interval and you're probably just fine. But how long is "long" and how often does it get a real run, in between the long idle periods?
biggest problem with idling an 01 for long periods of time would be in very cold weather when the coolant temp stays below 140.

I am using mine in a very similar way. I just changed my oil for the first time @ 100 hours 3300 miles. I let mine Idle up to 1200-1500 thousand depending where I get my stick to sit between the seat and the peddle. I am not goign to worry about it. ;D

Re:How Long Can The Engine Idle??
Well I’m in college so between some classes I have a long break and I live to far to go home so I’ll crash in my truck for awhile and also when I am working on the ranch and it’s a really hot day I’ll leave it running so I can get in it to cool off. Thanks for answering my questions I do appreciate it. ;D
I have let mine idle for 20 min. and more and do it all the time. I'm wondering if I shouldn't install a throttle on the dash or somewhere else so I can bring the RPM's up when idleing. Usually I have the AC on also. Has anyone installed some type of throttle?

Wow....nothing is more fun than pulling one year old threads back out of the closet.
Just use a stick. That's what I do and my truck probably idles more than most (I eat lunch in it and if it's hot or cold outside I leave the truck running so I can have AC or heat).
