Yes, it does. Otherwise, the engine will try to rotate on the engine mounts. You can damage the engine mounts that way.

Truck is an 06. Job isn't going too bad. Just trying to figure out best way to line up the little bolts in the hole to detach the flex plate.

Thanks for the replies and help. Project is at a standstill.

Got the tranny down last night and found that one bolt was threaded about 1/2 way out holding the transmission in and came out easily with my fingers.

Then found another with the head broke off the bolt and then the big surprise.... A big chunk broken off the top right corner of the bell housing.

Called around and priced reman transmissions all were pricey. Called dodge for interest sake. Guess how much they quoted me for new tranny????

Wait for it........

$15,000

Seriously.

I just laughed.

Spent the afternoon with a former CAT master mechanic and then college heavy equipment mechanic instructor welding it back together.

Engine to transmission adapter is also cracked. Got a price from Cummins of about $300.

Same fellow is going to take a stab at fixing it tommorow but I am gone to Spokane for the weekend so the project will resume Monday or Tuesday.

It was a bear getting tranny out from under truck. Definitely not looking forward to getting it back under.

Weld job on tranny looks very good. See how he makes out with the adapter.

Waiting in rear main seal before I can begin reassembly.

Holy crap dude!!! Seriously? That sucks :/
$15k?! You have got to be kidding! Was it gold plated with platinum guts? That's a joke!

Do you think the cause of the cracked bell housing and adapter could be from the vibration from the DMF?

I would bet that the adapter is definitely caused by DMF vibration. Bell housing could be the same but could also have been caused by a seized unjointed while loaded heavy.

Transfer case is also cracked. Brand new tcase waiting to go back in.

Uh oh. Buttoned it back together and the starter won't engage?

Is there a spacer or something wrong?

I was wondering how your progress was.
Did you remove the started from the adapter plate when you pulled that plate? Of did you pull the plate at all?
Do you hear the starter click on to try to engage?
Made sure you screwed on that PITA power wire?
Shot in the dark here, but did you put the flywheel back on the right way?

Very odd. Fiddled with it a few times. Had it running then it would do it again. Just whir and grind but not enGage and turn it over. Bar the engine over by hand a few times and try again. Etc.

Now it seems to be working fine.

Maybe some burrs on new flywheel from machining or starter worn to the old flywheel a little?

Not sure but not going to complain as long as it works.
