How can I tell what's wrong with an injector ?

My truck has been sitting for a couple months after the loud knocking started one day on the way home.
At first I thought it was a rod knock because there was no white smoke, but then the next day it started to smoke on idle (no I wasn't driving it).

I decided and hoped that i was an injector. Well, finally today, I decided to find out which one. I started the truck and let it idle for 2 minutes. The pulled the ex. manifold. Of course the worst possible one...........yup, number 6 was wet. I started the truck again for about 3 sec. just to see and sure enough the white smoke poured out of #6.

NOW....what to do, what to do. Let's go back in history 16,000 miles.
Last spring I had run low on oil after a loose oil filter screwed me. I ended up scuffing #6 cylinder wall and developed a knock. I drove it for a couple thousand miles before pulling the engine and rebuilding it. I adjusted the valves while I was at it, and added 14,000 miles to the rebuilt engine. NOW this happened.
Coincidence??? I'm thinking not. I'm assuming that the trauma in the #6 cylinder led to the demise of this injector.

Here is my question. How can I tell if the housing or the tip needs replaced ? What would be more common ? I'm trying to do this as cheap as possible since my income is not that great right now. That's why the truck has been sitting, but I really need to get it back on the road.

Looking for input. Thanks, Dan

Look for burrs on injector inlet.
Check nozzle holes for hole erosion or plugging.
Inspect end of nozzle for burrs or rough machine marks.
Look for cracks at nozzle end.
Check nozzle color for signs of overheating. Overheating will cause nozzle to turn a dark yellow/tan or blue (depending on overheating temperature).
If any of these conditions occur, replace injecto

You have already done the hard part. You have identified which injector has the problem. Don M will test and repair (if possible), the injector at a very reasonable price. Contact one of his dealers, and they will get you set up.
