"hopping"

my 6 speed is getting a hopping or jumping when i am backing up with a load.
Is this the beginning of a clutch failure? All seems well in forward gears

Is it hopping when the clutch is partially engaged? Just reverse? It may be clutch chatter....Sorry not to be so much help. Others with more experience will chime in, I'm sure!

Try putting it in 4 low and you won't have any problems.

I have the same problem, but no 4 low. Any more ideas?

I get it going forward with the power up towing very heavy when the weight is on the trailer and light on the truck at intersections that are on an uphill grade and I know it is spring wrap.

may be driveshaft alignment. it is pretty long, and has a rubber mounted carrier bearing, and under the torque we put out, it may deflect.

Don't know about these trucks but in a large truck if you try and slip the clutch while backing it will hop and bounce....

You just put it in reverse and let it idle back...

Not sure, but I beleive reverse gear ratio is about the same ratio as what second gear is going foward.

How are your motor/tranny mounts? When they get soft, they can twist pretty bad under load. Mine does it and I know my mounts are shot

Careful with backing in 4lo and dry pavement. You can wind your drivetrain up pretty fast. It will happen even faster if you have a heavy load on.
