High Trans Temps
High Trans Temps
Anyone know of a good transmission shop in Albuquerque or NM?
I've been having issues with high trans temps (220-240*) while slow speed driving or stuck in traffic. The temps will come down to about 190* once I get some speed so I'm not sure if my cooler or torque convertor is going out. I didn't have these issues til about a month ago.
Camping season is coming up and I don't want to have these issues pulling my 5ver. My temp probe is in the cooler line and the only mods I have is an AFE intake and Smarty Jr.
Thanks!

Sounds normal for the conditions. In slow speeds or stop and go the TC never locks and it is in fluid coupling all the time, thats where the majority of the heat is generated in an auto trans. As long it comes down and holds around 190 when the TC is locked you should be fine.
Your at the upper end of the range of normal operation but not out of it and the fluid is good for much more than that if ATF+4 is used. Your choice if you want to try an extra cooler but that has its drawbacks also.
Using manual gears and a lockup switch is another option depending on conditions and traffic.

I have seen the same temps in my rig. Hate driving it like that, but the tranny keeps going, so I've not messed w/ it much. I did install another cooler w/ fan plumbed up in the return line an still see similar temps. A new TC and VB would probably help, but if it ain't broke...
You might try synthetic ATF.

I've had gauges since 2004. I started using Amsoil and placed the trans temp probe in the cooler line in 2007. I bought my Smarty Jr in 2009. I'm thinking I would also see an increase in engine temp if the fan clutch was going out. I'm wondering if the thermostat in the air to oil cooler is going out.
Its possible the thermostat is stuck in bypass mode and there is little cooling goin on.
The temp gauge on the dash is a fake, only responds to what the ECU tells it. Its possible to see short jumps in temperature of 20-40 degrees that don't register on the gauge.
Tough to say what has changed. If the temp comes back down when your moving steadily then it sounds like the trans cooler is working. Possibly you have some blockage in the front area. Have you checked and cleaned between all the coolers up there to make sure there is good airflow?

How you drive in stop-and-go also plays a role. The harder you are on the throttle, the more heat you generate in the TC. In these cases, if I can I try to take it easy in the race to the next red light...or to the stopped car ahead.
Yeah I found no difference in accelerating harder and letting it get through to lock up faster versus slowly working my way up to lock up speed. It resulted in the same thing. HEAT. Stop and go just kills it period. I was thinking of adding a trans cooler till macattack_ga said it didn't help. What's a ball park cost on a decent TC & VB?
Stop and go for me is usually 180 to 185 according to the info the Edge Insight is pulling off the computer. Sometimes I think its a little high. I do a little better when I turn on Tow/Haul since mine will lock up in 3rd and stay there up to 55mph. I usually see 5 or more degrees drop.
While on the subject, does anyone know where the computer picks up the tranny temp? (location of sensor)
Thanks

ATF+4 operating range is 140-240 degrees. Its at the top but not out of the range nor abnormal for an OE unit.
