The side hole on the PML cover is for the fill line yes, and it is at the same level as the factory line. The top plug is the fill hole. The PML adds one quart capacity so I add 5 quarts total! PML cover is far cheaper than the Mag Hytec.
OK don't know what to tell you..... I went to look at mine a second time and no fill line... Looked at the one in the shop and no fill line on it...... I got from a guy for the bolts and gasket when everyone started having them bust off and for 10$ or what ever it cost me for the cover bolts and gasket in 04 it was a deal just to have... It was off a 04.... and no fill line.
Dads has one so I know what I'm looking for but its not there and I have look at other trucks that did not have them, so who knows...If yours was a 04.5 then that maybe was the change, that was about the time they started talking about the level on the oil for the rear diff and having some problems .

Shortly after that they started coming with a fill line stamped below the bottom of the hole.

There was a big long thread about it back then...
Funny you should say...."dealer told me not to fill to the bottom of the plug "
I just changed dads rear diff and when I pulled the plug on flat ground oil came out..... its a new truck its over filled from the factory, not much but some....Dealer said fill per book, calls for 3.8 qts, OK, did that- thats the bottom of fill hole.... What good is the line on the diff, or what good is the factory service book from Dodge.? The big book 200$-300$ that the dealer has and sells.

i seriously doubt that little bit of extra rear fluid will hurt it, probably help with cooling some.

Yep, don't really care about that just that diff has a line for one spec and book something else.
My offroad rig has always got more oil, use the jack to lift one side when I fill and never had a problem. Over the years everthing always looks 100%.

Got a question for you guys. Before I left for my trip back east (currently in Orlando), I drained the rear fluid, replaced the cover with a Mag-Hytec from my old Chevy HD, and added the 8 quarts recommended of 75-140. Well, the other day I was under the truck, just looking around, and found what seems to be where some fluid has 'spit' out of the front of the diff. It left a streak on the fuel tank where some fluid was spun out. What could be the cause of this? Too much fluid? Pinion angle problems?

I had this happen on my 2000 F-150 it was a blown pinon seal if I recall and I left it alone for over a year. I just periodically checked and refilled if fluid was low. After a while I had my mechanic replace for around $150.

That sucks, the truck only has 38K on it. Oh well, this stuff happens, but only right after the warranty expires.......

Yeah I know what you mean about right after warranty mine failed around 40k but I drove it about 15-20k more and only had it fixed for peace of mind. I would just check the fluid every 6-8 weeks and it was never very low just basiclly wet on the front of diff and underneath. I would check it every couple of weeks so that you make sure your leak is not worse than mine, but you should be okay for a while.

I saw that on my truck the other day while installing the Mag_Tec..... Right on the inner rear corner of the fuel tank. Mine isn't differential fluid though, its diesel fuel. Just assumed I had overfilled the tank.... but now its got me thinking I've got a fuel tank/vent line leak????... If it ain't raining again tomorrow, I'll get underneath it and do a little more investigating. BTW, 12565 miles.

mine did, sitting on level ground and after driving it about 20 miles. It showed exactly full on the dipstick. I put eight quarts in it when I changed the cover.

Last 3 times I filled it it was about that just to the fill hole.

I sure wish I knew why there are so many discrepancies <sp> in these manuals. My owners manual says for 9 1/4" front axles to fill 1/4" below the hole +/- 1/4" (HUH??)
For 11 1/2" rear axle same as above......fill to 1/4" below the hole +/- 1/4"
So, I understand that as either even with the hole up to 1/2" below.

My (SERVICE MANUAL
2006
RAM TRUCK
INCLUDES SRT-10
AND DIESEL) says.......

Front Axle +/- .03 L (1 oz.)
9 1/4 AA 2.2 L (74 oz.)
9 1/4 AA EL 2.0 L (68 oz.)

Rear Axle +/- .03 L (1 oz.)
11 1/2 AA Open 4.2 L (142 oz.)
11 1/2 AA Trac-Rite 4.0 L (135 oz.)

I changed my axle fluid yesterday for the first time. I sucked just shy of a gallon out the rear and only about 1 1/2 quarts out the front. I had a hard time with the front. I had trouble getting the sucker hose (lol) in. I have no idea if I got all the old crap out or not. I refilled both with 75W-140 Royal Purple up to the holes.

Roperteacher got a question for you--
When you put your PML cover on did you use any locktite or thread sealer
on the dif bolts and plugs?
I did mine last year and it "seeps"around about half of the bolt holes and plugs. Not enough to drip just makes it look ugly.

Mattk50,

When I changed mine 10K ago I pulled mine but did not change covers and I didn't use any thread sealer or lock tight on mine and I don't have any leaks at all. BTW I did not use a TQ wrench on the bolts I just used the good and tight method.
