I am needing to replace all of the fluids under the truck. I have a buddy who is going to help me . I want to replace the Trans. and differentials, can any of you suggest a good synthetic that i can buy at an autozone or parts store , and what weights i need, i cannot find my owners manual.

The truck is a 2005 2500 4x4 with auto tranny. thanks in advance for the help.

You need 75w-90 front and rear diffs
ATF in trans and xcase...

I would run amsoil. Look for a dealer on here.

Your going to have alot of different people chiming in on what fluids to use. Any synthetic oil made by a major company will do you fine. It really all boils down to what your prefer. I personally use Amsoil like alot of people on here do.

For the front diff your going to use 75w-90 (2.38 QTS)
For the rear diff you can run 75w-90 or if you tow often run 75w-140 (3.8 QTS, 10.5" Axel)
For the tranny run ATF+4 (Don't remember the QTS) (Make sure you install a new filter)
For the T-Case run ATF+4 (Don't remember the QTS either)

I'm sure someone can fill in the amounts for the tranny/t-case.

All diesels in 05 have the 11.5 axle. The capacity is 3.8. 2.65 is the capacity for the 10.5. There is no need to run any LSD additive.

As far as 75w-140 for heavy towing.. I don't think that it is necessary, even DRW 1 Ton's use 75w-90.. The most I would do is 75w-110, which I believe is an amsoil exclusive.

When changing the fluid in the tranny to synthetic dont you have to drain and refill all the fluid in the TC too? How do you do that?

All the fluid in the tranny is synthetic as it is ATF+4.

If you have money to burn buy it from a dealer, otherwise look for other sources.

buy 7 quarts of 75w90 for the diffs, the 48re needs 4 quarts of ATF4 (I use Mopar to keep it the same as whats in it) for regular service, 7 quarts for a tranny rebuild according to the service manual. when I did mine it took over 6 quarts for some reason (torque converter must have drained somehow) so may want to be prepared for that. the trans pan gasket is reusable.

Torque converter and transmission fluid change: Drop the transmission pan, change filter, re-install pan, add 6 quarts ATF4, disconnect return line to transmission at transmission, use a short piece of hose to run from disconnected line into clear 1 gallon container, start truck, when 1 gallon container fills up, shut of truck, add 4 more quarts to transmission and repeat process for a total of three times. At the end of the third time, fluid should change to a nice clean red.

Cheapest I found ATF4 fluid, Wallmart.
