Help before taking to dealer.
Help before taking to dealer.
I have 65,000 miles and have an appointment next week to get this stuff checked out before warranty runs out at 70,000. Any input would be helpful so I can fix it before I take it in and it's not covered on warranty. I bought this truck new and will probably be buried in it since I am now retired and won't to be able to afford a new one in my lifetime.
1. Rough idle, was just when cold now all the time, changed fuel filter and didn't change it. Lost about 3 mpg in the last month. I put a hose on the wires by the a/c and it didn't change anything.
2. Hoot owl noise, use to be just every once in a while when cold but yesterday I could hear it driving around town with window down. Power steering whine?
3. Tranny still hunts between 2-3 and truck is a dog taking off from stop with any trailer even 14' single axle unloaded, at hwy speed tons of power. This summer started vibration/roar in cab when at hwy speed and go up any incline at all, does not do it on flat or down hill. Dealer has "rebuilt" tranny 3 times and seemed like when I left the dealership it was all fixed and I feel a big difference then would go back to problems within a few days.
4. Thinking of changing out all u-joints on rear driveline, is that covered under warranty and what is the cost difference between changing them including the center bearing vs getting a single unit drive line? I have read here where some say get the u-joints that you can grease and some say not to????
Thanks.

#1 could be injector or injector solinoid
#2 not sure. did you check fluid level on ps pump? Could be the waste gate fluttering with a little carbon build up.
3# start barking for a new tranny not their rebuild. they probably keep just replacing parts and the whole think has problem. Also could be the tourque converter is junk and they may not have replaced it.
#4 not warranty coverered. should not be over 2 hours labor and no more than $45 a joint for greeseables. I like greeseable since mine where shots by 140k unless you can get spice lifetime joints. The dealer will only put in AAM joints and they don't last. I got spicer lifetime from the factor in my 99 and all joints great with 323k. Carrier bearing should be fine. If it isn't then get a 1 piece shaft. When my carrier goes mine will get a 1 piece.

iweb,
when did you last have the fuel filter changed????
i run stanadyne or schaeffee oil in my fuel about every third tank,
so far, 52K miles, 2005 model, the old diesel runs like a top,
I am very careful where i buy fuel,
when at home I buy at the same place the ambulance service buys their fuel, as they said, they had no fuel related problems at that station.
When on the road i buy at the large truck stations along the interstate as they rotate their fuel supply fast.

Yes checked oil level in power steering, changed fuel filter a couple of weeks ago and no change, and I am also careful where I fuel up.
I take it in tomorrow so will have to see what they say this time. Their tranny guy is in school this week so hopefully he leaned something.
Thanks for the help.

Got the truck back today and they did nothing except steal 1/4 of a tank of fuel, I took it in with the tank topped off and got it back with 3/4 tank and they drove 37 miles.
They answered:
1. Could not duplicate.
2. Door seals bad, tires need replaced, could have bad cord.
3. Could not get code because batteries were low and had acid, but could be gov. pressure solenoid and sensor. Last oil change I had them check batteries and they said they were ok plus I just cleaned the terminals 2-3 weeks ago and each battery had 12.4v.
4. Checked u-joints and all ok.
So I am going to have a mechanic friend help me change out the u-joints and will have Autozone check my batteries and the take my truck 50 miles to another dealer to see what they say.
