Two things that I know of are the tps has a flat spot fairly common if it is the speed that you set the cruise at regularly it is even worse. Watch your RPM guage for 2-300 RPM shift without reason. Eventually it will throw a code but not always.
2nd check all of your battery cables for corrosion (hidden) especially any pigtails and ground points. Even bad ground connections have been known to send the wrong signal to your ecm.

Mine does the same if I use the cruise control. Haven't noticed the surge without cruise.

Replacing the TPS cured mine...temporarily. At 69k it is starting to come back again. Going to have to get it in the shop to get it on record so I can hopefully get it covered under warranty.

Started out very gradually only when using cruise control (which I use a lot). Eventually it progressed to doing it anytime it was under light, steady throttle. Just about got me killed one time when it totally shut off. That was the only time it set a code.

I am just a bit discouraged by this. I understand parts wear out but not 2 in 70k.

If I understand correctly, they are a lot harder to get to on 3rd gen trucks. I think after I take it in I am going to go through the wiring harness myself to look for corrosion. Seems like that may be a more likely culprit then 2 bad sensors. I would think if it is a sensor problem that more people would be having problems with it.

Good luck with yours. I hope you have a good dealer close by. The first two I took it to (while on the road) didn't have any good diesel tech's. I finally met one not far from the house. He normally does other things for the dealership but cut his teeth on diesels. he told me if I asked for him he would personally take care of it each time.

Mine doesn't have any consistant tempo. it is intermitant. I first noticed it last summer when romping up a mountain with the camper on the back (no cruse control) it appeared to be a little more noticable with a load on.

Not really sure what to make of it.

The puzzling thing is that it is at the same frequency as the drone.

I'll ask around and see what a couple of mechanic buddies think of it too.

Houtex,
Try this, mix about 16oz Power Service Diesel Klean and 1 qt of non detergent 30w motor oil with a full tank of fuel. Let me know if the surging goes away.
I swear when I do this the surging goes away, or I'm dreaming it.
