I always fill my filter, Hairy1. But lots of guys don't, and I've never heard of it causing a problem.

I would probably bite the bullet and do this too, if I were in your situation. Just take as a slightly expensive lesson learned. Nobody will be as careful and detail oriented about your truck as you are.

They should call it "the first and last oil change, free" because it's definitely the last time they'll see you in for one!

If it was me I would just change the filter too while I'm at it. The Fleetguard Stratopores are probably better than whatever they used (Mopar?). If the guy cranked it on too tight you might as well fight with it now instead of later (when it has gone through hundreds of heating/cooling cycles).

Based on what you have said here recently, I too would dump all oil and filter and start over. Just to be safe.

how much should i fill the crankcase with if i drain all out from the drain plug and dump the filter out?

NOOOO, do not reuse old filter that is being "pennywise & pound foolish" buy a new Fleetguard. I dump about 2.5 gallons of oil in & then go from there!

You will be ok to leave the filter on if the oil has just been changed. It will have @ 1 1/2 qts. of oil. So start by adding 10 qts then check it. If you take the old oil filter off to drain that oil out you will need to put a new filter on. By the way, which do you like better your Dodge or the Chevy 3500?

so far my experience hasnt been great with the dodge. and i cant say the same for the last 5 GM i have owned, all have been perfect.
i have had a:
2004 gmc sierra
2005 2500hd gas 4x4
2005 1500 z71
2005 3500 duramax (still own)
2005 gmc denali

all were flawless

so far i have had wiper problems, seat stains, and now dealing with this oil headache in only 5k miles.

hopefully it will all work out though!

oh and the 97 suburban has 200k on it and got a brand new 4l60e tranny at 130k. other than that the 350 is still kickin perfect.

oh and the cummins makes the dodge and the allison makes the chevy.

First, does the end cap wrench match the flutes on the oil filter?

Are you trying from underneath while pushing upward as hard as you can? It's definitely more accessible from the bottom and you should be able to put a bunch of force on it that way. Good luck and don't give up!
